Lieberman will not be the nominee, says Bill Press.
Very critical of Lieberman's attacks on not just Dean, but Kerry, Gep, et al.
Of course, Buchanan thinks Lieberman is making a good move.

1. Bill Press is right. Buchanan is a wingnut.
It is so obvious to me that Lieberman won't be the nominee that I give it no thought at all.

Even the DLC has ditched him.

60. INSIDE THE BELTWAY CONSULANTS SAY
There will be no clear winner going into the convention. The best chance Lieberman stands is in this scenario.

They think my concept of DEAN leading Kerry by a slim margin is just "wack".

So I guess that's why THEY get the big bucks.

42. Will Joe be installed as our 2004 Mondale??
That is my fear: the Dem power brokers will start funding him like crazy, and afford him other advantages, as well. By early Spring, we will know. Unless some Dem hopeful emerges so powerfully, that even the DLC/DNC can't stop them, I definitely believe the installed nominee will be either Lieberman or Kerry. (Of course, Kerry might emerge on his own.)

Makes me sick. For the first time, I am in an early primary state. I am furious with the DLC and the media trying to pick our candidate for us.
Lieberman should be VOTED OUT by reason on non-selection, not dumped by the DLC and the media.

I don't know about you, but I'm taking my voting power BACK from the DLC. Pro or con, they're not going to make my mind up for me or speak for me!!

however, don't preach something that you don't practice. How many politicians have screamed about morality and condemed the entertainment industry for it's "IMMORALITY"? Where do these people like Lieberman get the right to go after them when he like so many others are in BED WITH WALL STREET????? 23. I understand your point. People are going overboard in their
criticism of Lieberman sometimes. But I have to tell you, I've vascillated over the years about him. I lived in CT for a couple of years, and while I liked him then, I didn't feel I could completely trust him. In the first place CT is the insurance capitol of the country, if not the world. Lieberman has to be beholden to the insurance companies, and in this day and age of out-of-control HMOs, etc., he just doesn't appeal to me. I think he's a good man, and he's very charming (if somewhat boring sometimes), and I appreciate his traditional Jewish values. But there's just something tiny element of the guy I can't trust all the way. And this came out in his criticism of Dean yesterday--the criticism didn't seem totally honest; it didn't make sense.

Does anyone else have this same feeling about Lieberman, or am I crazy?

When he was VP Candidate I thought he was great. Since thenthere have beeen incidents which made me not completely trust him. The Enron Debacle and his promise to really go after them. I watched and got the impression no one was putting forth the effort her. Maeme wonder is his loyalty more to busines or to ordinary Americans.
For the most part he seems to be a realy nice guy but our Presidency needs more than a realy nice guy.

Edited on Tue Aug-05-03 04:47 PM by cryingshame
And to most of America's voting public.

It's too bad if it's "code". If it's Fundie code then it needs to be taken back and reclaimed as a Liberal cause.

Gore did us a favor by publishing that book about modern families and how they're not all like the traditional
Leave it Beaver type.

And the sad fact is, many people on the Left denigrate & attack anyone who cares about Family and Spirituality.

54. But what does it mean?
Exactly how does Family Values get defined? Is there an absolute standard here, or is it up to interpretation like how to define art?

I want an ABSOLUTE SPECIFIC definition of "Family Values" to know exactly what some mean when they bandy it around as some kind of all curing Blue Star ointment.

I'm sorry, but your post was very soft on specifics. I want exacting terms, not platitudes. Up to the challenge?:-)

24. Graham is Lieberman's big problem in the south
Dukakis won Super Tuesday in 1988 (he got more delegates than anyone else) by winning Texas, Florida, and either Louisianna or Georgia. He did that with a coalition of migrated Northeasterners (FL), Jews (all three), and Hispanics (all three). Lieberman could have done the same thing but for Graham's presence in the race.

35. I Agree, DSC.
Senator Graham will do well in the South.

Also, Dick Gephardt will do very well there because he will have lots of union money which he will wisely spend spotlighting his Ant-Nafta and Anti-Taking-Jobs-Off-Shore record which will resonate with Southerners.

The liberal urban centers in the South will be voting for Howard Dean.

Lieberman's no show at the NAACP really cost him dearly and will also hurt him in the Southern Primaries.

I think when the Super Tuesday is over and the dust has settled, Joe Lieberman will be faced with either exiting graciously (which he is incapable of doing), sticking it out to the end (which he will also be incapable of doing without money or matching funds) or dropping out and continue to try and steal attention away from the remaining candidates every chance he can.

Lieberman will not place even third in any of the Southern Primaries. Not one.

Lieberman, who says that Dems are moving too far left, would be a disaster for America.
Then it would truly be the "United States of Israel" and the neocon Christian right would rule
as taskmasters. If we don't get an honest Democrat elected, we should just let Bush have it
and let the house come tumbling down on his head. We can pick up the pieces after his last term and
be in control for the next 20 years!

32. On Presidential politics Buchanan has no credibility .
In fact I can't think of where he has credibility, but that's a discussion for another day.

Buchanan consistently over estimates the general right-wingnutedness (is that a word) of the american voter.

I think that given the choice between a republican and (how does Al Sharpton say it?)an elephant wearing an donkey suit, most people pick the republican. While I recognize that the economy, and the fact that unemployment is having an effect amongst white collar workers, might leave some conservative/centrist voters looking for a viable alternative to W, I think you still got to worry about the base. Now, when it comes to the general election I am firm "anybody but Bush man" and I would vote for Lieberman, but I would be holding my nose. Others, I am sure, couldn't do it and Ralph Nader would have larger constituency than he did in the last election. Many would simply stay home. If the pundits saying that the electorate has become too consevative to elect a traditional Democrat then W. wins, period. Lieberman cannot change this.

I like Kerry, what can I say I am a center leaning liberal from Massachusetts. Well maybe leaning is too strong a word, let's say a slight list to the center. However, I am starting to warm up to Dean. It may be that the best strategy is to eschew standard liberal/conservative labels and run as an outsider. Dean, clearly, is the only candidate who could pull that off.
