The debate over affirmative action in Colorado heated up Monday as Gov. Bill Owens again bashed a U.S. Supreme Court decision that allows race to be considered in college admissions.
Owens said he opposes discrimination in any form, including allowing students to attend college when they otherwise would be unqualified.
"I'm for affirmative action when it is defined as everyone gets to the starting line equally. And then you allow for merit to take over," Owens said on KOA-AM radio's Mike Rosen talk show. "But I'm against racial discrimination. I think it's racial discrimination to say a child should get a head start because of their race.
Owens also accused former Democratic Sen. Pat Pascoe and "some of my friends on the left" of being out of step with the rest of Colorado on the issue of affirmative action.
