CHENEE will make a slap-down comment about "armchair retired Vice Presidents" the way he did about "armchair generals."

President GORE is on fire. I can't blame him for not being like this before: None of us knew what we were up against with the Shrubbites. Like pre-9-11, there were plenty of CLINTON-GORE initiatives for anti-terrorism, but there was no national will.

He just finished. Magnificent, magnificent.

...what a tremendous speech.

I am so impressed.

I used to think he should just stay away...after all, he lost against Bush (sort of).

But, it makes me feel so sad that he is not our President.

I used to scoff at those who want him to run in '04. Now I see why they want him to. He would crush the pResident if he ran.

If only things were different. I grieve for us and America. I want it to be all right in America. I wish there was a President Gore.

before 6:30....too bad.......but at least you got most of it. There was alot he addressed....so much that has gone wrong.....but it was easy to listen to...

Wow. Refreshing to have someone articulate policy points, someone smart, someone who has a plan and a vision and not just soundbites and "personality".

Gore may never win a personality contest, but I'd share a beer with him any day.

I strongly believe that Americans are tired of the personality politics of Clinton and W, and it's time to get back to the intelligent, gentlemanly statesman who can LEAD America with a forward looking agenda. Gore has such vision for a better world -- technology, the environment, infrastructure, science, ...

Its a shame that Gore ran such a bad campaign in 2000, that he picked Lieberman, that he felt he had to distance himself from Clinton..

If Gore sounded how he sounded today, he would've won in a landslide.

ps. To Greens and other Marxists: yeah, this guy really is the same as Bush/the GOP :eyes:

Gore speech was an incredible statement of defiance.
I was in awe of the depth and consistancy against everything George Bush.
As a long time supporter of Al Gore I am feeling vindicated.

I got a really weird feeling watching that. I just can't place it. Before I thought that the idea that Gore would change his mind was absurd if not just a cute pipe dream, and now, even after his affirmation that he hasn't and won't be changing his mind, I think that this is a very strategic move on his behalf.

I seriously, now, can see him endorsing himself. He totally put the chess pieces in place.

I can't really explain it, though. I had the whole idea in my head today when it aired on MoveOn.org, but I didn't have time to jot the ideas down. It's just that the last words he said are interesting. For example, "not going to join them" could mean that he won't be joining the candidates on the issues, because his position is much different and more profound. The guy has always had a way of saying things which have different interpretations. He's a true politician.

19. Not a bad speech; could have used this fire in 2000

Being out from under the yoke of candidacy--with all of its requisite concessions and evasions, not to mention color-coordination consultants--is clearly a good thing for Gore.

The best moment was his evocation of Orwell, which is certainly the right button to push in a liberal academic setting. I wonder if Gore could sell that message to the vast American electorate that doesn't read books, or when it does, regards Clancy as its Orwell; it would be interesting to see, at least, how he would explain the value of privacy and other civil liberties to a public eager to surrender both for "security."

However, the veep completely lost me when he praised Bush for the attacks on Afghanistan and Iraq. If I wanted a Democrat to splutter this kind of nonsense, I'd send a check to Lieberman.

And while he was calling for "restoring checks and balances," Gore conveniently forgot to mention the spinelessness of Congressional Dems in passing the Patriot Act and abdicating responsibility over war. That omission rather undercut his argument--a passive legislature can't restrain an aggressive executive.

Still, this speech was a useful moment, ratcheting up pressure on the White House, inspiring the Democratic Party to find its voice, and suggesting that Gore may yet have some valuable role to play if he can continue to find the courage to speak for himself. Three out of five stars.
