Coming Sunday: AP rips apart Powell's U.N. speech
You won't find this story online tonight (at least, that's the way it's supposed to work). But the AP has moved a very long story taking Powell's presentation, point by point, and basically saying it's all bunk. The story is embargoed for Sunday release, so I can't post any big excerpts. But be alert: There's about to be another giant "drip" of the "drip drip drip."

Between this, Jessica Lynch, Flight 93, the fake gold -- is there so much as one thing that we were told the truth about on this war?

THE POWELL CASE: A look at U.S. indictment of Iraq six months later
UNDATED — In the lead-up to invasion, the U.S. government's case against Iraq, built largely on allegations of illicit weapons programs, was put most forcefully by Secretary of State Colin Powell in a lengthy address to the U.N. Security Council on Feb. 5. Much has happened in the months since, months of war and revelation. The AP looks at the ``WMD'' case against Iraq, making a point-by-point review of Powell's allegations, what was known at the time and what has been learned since.
BC-Iraq-The Powell Case, 2,660 words, moving Aug. 7 for use beginning Sunday, Aug. 10.

1. Thanks, newsjock
I've been trying to persuade myself that there were intrepid journalists out there still working the case even if the talking bobbleheads on TV are too ga-ga over Ahnold and Kobe to notice. Any check of the archives would show that Powell's UN speech was a definite turning point so this is particularly welcome news.

3. Do you think it was moved from the Friday news dump
to Sunday to keep it off the Sunday morning talk shows?

4. It's better that it's in the Sunday paper
More people read the Sunday paper. But if the buzz is big enough over the weekend about this story, then you will see it on MTP.

7. lol thats kind of stereotyping.
But I do agree to an extent, he doesn't care who is giving him orders, he'll take 'em.

Maybe when he realized his front of lies is causing such a great amount of death, thats when he decided to step down.

He looks freaked out lately to me... but with those eyebrows, I guess he always looks freaked out. MORE SO freaked out would be the best way I can think to put it.

11. If they are setting him up he still deserves it!
This dude sold his soul to the Rockefeller repubs YEARS ago! He did Reagan and Bush's shitwork right down the line, for the payola and the perks and NEVER for the good of America! The Pubs knew Powell was a lapdog ever since they used him in Nam to cover their tracks on the murdering of women and kids!

Now Powell has his bigtime job and his kid does too! They own all kinds of stock in companies that will no doubt benefit greatly from the FCC laws Powells son is trying to sneak through! Do you think the Powells have the average American's interests, or their country's intrests at heart?

Colin Powell is a total political creation of the GOPers IMO! Has he EVER really been in combat? Has he EVER displayed a will of his own? Has he told countless lies, time after time, to conceal behind the scenes wrongdoing, including murder and gunrunning for Bush and Reagan?

I have surfed the net for many hours looking into Powells past and I don't like what I've seen! I have read everything I can find about Powell! I do not trust Powell anymore than I do Poppy Bush, Cheney, Rumsfield, or Baker! It has nothing to do what so ever, with the color of the man's skin, but the color of the mans heart is what makes me dislike him! Powell is as fake and deceptive as anything else about the Bush Crime Cartel!

These people hide the truth because they know they commit crimes and like any common criminal, they fear getting caught in the wrong and being made to pay for their crimes! The Crimes they commit range from grand theft to conspiracies to commit murder IMO! High Crimes And Misdemeanors far more serious than Bill Clinton's lies!

16. If that's what they are trying to do, that's quite excellent!
It would be most beneficial, a little ways off, to see him walk the plank - and the inevitable comparisons to another rat jumping a sinking ship. Wouldn't look great especially to dump on AND THEN LOSE the only war veteran AND more-or-less popular African-American on the team (sorry, CONdi). That would further help to lock up the African-American vote for the Democrats.

I'm surprised the neocons haven't turned on him more viciously by now.

9. Hey Judicial Watch is Firing UP the Anthrax
lest we forget the numerous gaffs that can indict this gov't...

The Junta was on CIPRO before the attacks!!! happened...

Only sent to Dashle and Leahy and killed a few postal workers...

The stuff was from Ft. Detrick...

The FBI (bumbling patsies) have been dropping the ball...

WH house admitted that the Junta was on the stuff before 911...

They had info about anthrax attacks, but nothing on the several intelligence briefings about 'imminent' attacks in Sept...

oh yeah Powell...on his Feb 5th powerpoint presentation was completely wrong and erronous...no WMDs...no nothing

But the State department 'Dove' did say the UN was irrelevent...that was the key point

12. Thanks for the tip! I was inspired to do a google search
and this guy is impressive--lots of reporting from Iraq and also about nuclear proliferation. And (I'm ashamed to say--because I've read it but forgot he was one of the authors), he co-wrote "The Bridge at No Gun Ri" about a scandalous event in the Korean War.

Also found a bitter blogger who hates him because he questioned the US ability to distribute humanitarian aid in Iraq, preferring the UN and NGOs. That, of course, as far as I'm concerned, further recommends him for the task he has taken on. Apparently in his reporting on Iraq, he was NOT embedded, but (like Fisk) reported independently. True? (this blog is not reliable)

I'm going to try to read what articles of his I can find. Oh, he also won at least one Pulitzer--in 2000.

18. Rummy as New-Age poet
Sounds like Rummy's been spending too much time with Peggy Noonan.

Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld told U.S. senators last month the Bush administration had no "dramatic new evidence" before ordering the Iraq invasion. "We acted because we saw the existing evidence in a new light through the prism of our experience on Sept. 11," he said.

That explains the dolphins as weapons inspectors. If they can save Elian, they can surely liberate the Iraqis.
