Gore as VP in 2004?
I've read several "My Guy"/Gore messages lately, and dismissed most of them, off handedly.

Then I thought back about Dean's description of his ideal VP, and the various VP qualifications that have been bandied about in DU.

Face it, gang, Gore would make the IDEAL VP, as weird as the idea seems.

After all, he has the experience. Plus, to all of us who would love to see Gore avenge himself against the Bushies, but may worry about Gore getting in the race, this VP idea would be our next best option.

There is a bit of precedent for a VP to serve under two Presidents as well, but you have to go WAYYYYY back. George Clinton was Jefferson's VP from 1805-1809, and then Madison's VP from 1809-1812. Also, John Calhoun was John Quincy Adams' VP from 1825-1829, then Jackson's VP from 1829-1832.

Maybe Gore is position himself to run...just not as the President :-)

7. 22nd Amendment

"No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice, and no person who has held the office of President, or acted as President, for more than two years of a term to which some other person was elected President shall be elected to the office of the President more than once."

Not a thing about VP's here!

5. I don't think Gore would want it
Honestly, he wanted to be President and got his heart broken in 2000. I doubt he wants to play second fiddle again for 4 or (hopefully) 8 more years.
But I'd be happy to see him as the running mate of one of the Canidates..ohhh baby , Kerry/Gore.....::drool::

15. As I've said before...
...whoever gets the Dem nomination, be it Dean, Kerry,or whoever, their running mate needs to be from the south. I've been saying for months now that Edwards would be absolutely perfect as a running mate-he's energetic, moderate, and a southerner. Being a moderate southern Democrat would do 2 things: first, it would win a bunch of monderates (duh) who went for Bush back in 2000. Second, it would capture southern votes, which may make not only Florida winable, but maybe Arkansas, Tennessee, and almost certinly his home state of South Carolina. If that happenes, then I would consider that a MAJOR victory for the Dems.
Bottom line: Running mate needs to be from the south.

26. More like Gore-Kerry
But really, that is simply a fantasy ticket for Dems like us that would never win in the real world. Gore isn't a "real" Southerner. Kerry and Gore are too much alike: very smart, very good at policy, but slightly aloof. Gore didn't carry his home state of Tennesee in 2000 when there was less right wing sentiment in this country; It would be impossible for him to do so in 2004. Clinton was viewed as a true southerner, which is one of the reasons he was able to win several southern states. With Clinton it wasn't about ideology, they voted for him because he was extremely charismatic. They're are few politicians who can do what Clinton did. Reagan was like that. Despite what the media says about W being popular, he will does not have the crossover appeal of a Clinton or a Reagan.

The bottom of the ticket should always reinforce the strengths of the top of the ticket, while balancing things out at the same time. If Kerry or Gore is at the top, a slightly more moderate candidate from a southern or swing state will most likely be at the the bottom of the ticket.

27. Mostly, I agree
But Gore has star quality that just can't be used right now for the Presidency.

Shame to let that go to waste....

What about a Gore Secretary of State?

12. Exactly
For Gore to be a VP to one of the current goones in just crazy. Anyone that has been a CONG, SEN, and VP deserves to be PRESIDENT. This is ludacis.

By the way, no he cant be VP again. There is more to the 22nd that just the president line. Research it and you will find out it cant be done. Either way it is a terrible idea.

14. Well, I DID research it
Here's the ENTIRE text:

Section 1. No person shall be elected to the office of the President more than twice, and no person who has held the office of President, or acted as President, for more than two years of a term to which some other person was elected President shall be elected to the office of the President more than once. But this Article shall not apply to any person holding the office of President when this Article was proposed by Congress, and shall not prevent any person who may be holding the office of President, or acting as President, during the term within which this Article becomes operative from holding the office of President or acting as President during the remainder of such term.

Section 2. This Article shall be inoperative unless it shall have been ratified as an amendment to the Constitution by the legislatures of three-fourths of the several States within seven years from the date of its submission to the States by the Congress.

So PLEASE tell us all where the part about the VP comes in,I just don't see it anywhere.

17. You're Confusing Two Issues
There is the two term limit for the Pres (22nd Amendment), and the 12th Amendment, which states that no one ineligible to the Presidency can be elected to the Vice-Presidency.

How can EITHER of these affect Gore being VP again?

I'm sorry, but you're simply incorrect.

19. Oh ,This Would Be Huge!
The Press would EAT IT UP!

Al Gore would be seen as having more humility than any politician, EVER, and I believe the Press would flop over and be Gore friendly, especially if Al was, well..., forgiving and gracious.

Gore SHOULD be President, and he SHOULDN'T have to wait.

But that's not the way things worked out. Heres your chance for 8 more yers of Gore, and a new setup for the presidency in 2012.

Then, who could deny a two time VP? How can you get any more prepared than THAT, LOL!

21. Very dumb idea, plus here is the proof you cant serve 3 terms
http://gi.grolier.com/presidents/aae/vp/vpusa.html
The vice-presidency of the United States is one of the two positions in the government of the United States that is filled in an election open to all eligible voters in every state and the District of Columbia. The vice-president is the second highest ranking officer in the executive branch of the federal government, beneath only the PRESIDENT. Both serve concurrent 4-year terms.

Gore is far and above any of the candidates now. Accepting VP is way below him and illegal.

22. This Isn't Proof Of Anything! What Are You Talking About???
Nowhere does it mention that A VP can't serve more than two terms!

I know you don't LIKE the idea, but you are in complete denial on this!

Please-ANYBODY-show me something that actually proves that a VP is limited to two terms.

23. Sigh.
You're just wrong here, bud. The only legal restriction on the Vice-Presidency is in the 12th Amendment: "But no person constitutionally ineligible to the office of President shall be eligible to that of Vice-President of the United States." Gore is not ineligible to be President, therefore he is not ineligible to be Vice-President.

Since the primary purpose of the Vice-President is to replace the President if needed, it's absurd to think that anyone considered qualified for the latter office would somehow be unqualified for the former.

Though I gotta say, citing an online encyclopedia to trump direct quotations from the Constitution is a new one. I mean, you want to talk definitive sources, I guess Grolier is the shiznit. :eyes:

29. No, Gore has positioned himself as an elder statesment of the Dem Party
I'm sure that whoever the Dem President nominee is will solicit Gore's advice. I'm sure Dean would. As far as a position in a Democratic White House Admin, I don't know, but I could see Gore being sent to the UN to help us out in Iraq. Gore could be sent to our allies as a way to rebuild our alliances with our allies again.

Gore of course, could be asked to help with the environment, which is one of his passions, but I don't know if he would served in an official capacity.
