A winning approach for Gray Davis

In order for Davis to have a chance, he needs to embrace the media's anointment of Arnold as his de facto opponent and use it to his advantage: This will effectively turn it into a two man race. "It's me or Arnold and all of the others are irrelevant," needs to be his operative line. That's key: Because in a "do you love Gray election" he's dead meat. But in a Gray vs. Arnold fight, he stands a fair chance of winning. Because now there's another "evil" for voters to compare Gray to.

Then it's time for a down and dirty slugfest, built on two separate prongs: First, get into Arnold's face. Challenge him to a one-on-one debate. Force him to confront issues he doesn't currently have a clue even exist. Arnold's no idiot, but he's also totally unqualified to be Governor of California and he has very little time to "study up" on the issues. Catch him flat footed.

Then as a second prong: Ridicule, ridicule and more ridicule -- not by Davis himself, but by others. Some here may not think this is fair game, but the truth is that this guy has never conducted himself in anything approaching a statesmanlike manor. That's relevant. I don't know if it's true or not true, but anyone who says that an allegation that he inappropriately groped several female interviewers without their consent is not fair game in a campaign for Governor just hasn't been paying attention.

And by the way, just how long is it going to take Democrats to understand that we can't continue to play nice while the Republicans play hardball. In case you haven't noticed, we've been getting our brains bashed in lately. What is going on in California right now is part and parcel to an ongoing GOP attack on democracy. It's happening in California. It's happening in Texas. It happened in Colorado. And just in case some have forgotten, it happened to the whole darn country in 2000, and American soldiers are dying because of it as we speak. We don't have the moral right to play softball. There's too much on the line.

"It's me or him, boys and girls. It's me or him. Now choose." That's the only campaign Davis can run that stands much of a chance right now. And since none of the other Democrats in the race stand a chance of winning in a divided field, that's also the only chance the Democratic party has.
