Should Davis Resign to stop the Republicans ?

Noone in the press seems to be paying attention to how this recall could be killed in an instant. If Gray Davis resigned, Lt. Governor Cruz Bustamente (a Democrat) would fill out the rest of Davis' term and the recall would be cancelled. I think, if the polls show him losing, Davis should resign at the last minute to protect California from falling into Republican hands. He can wait untill the day before the vote if he wants to (I think). He probubly doesn't want to encourage that speculation, but this is a way out if thigs look bleak. What do you all think ?
