More than 500 plaintiffs given 30 days to accept $55 million deal

The Archdiocese of Boston has offered $55 million to settle 542 clergy sex abuse lawsuits, an attorney for the plaintiffs said Friday.
THE OFFER CAME just a week after Archbishop Sean Patrick O’Malley was installed as head of the nation’s fourth-largest diocese.
The settlement would resolve claims from men and women who said they were abused as children by clergy within the Boston Archdiocese while church leaders routinely ignored the misdeeds. A recent report from the state attorney general estimated that more than 1,000 children were abused over four decades.
The Rev. Christopher Coyne, a spokesman for the archdiocese, would not comment on the proposed settlement, telling The Associated Press that there was an agreement not to publicly discuss negotiations.
