Thanks. And those of us unable to leave will have to live with a Scalia jr. on the supreme court. I am embarrassed by the number of no votes here.

NOTE to DU: Ideals are good, but pragmatism is better.

43. Agreed
but it's legitmate to view rejection of Lieberman as a pragmatic way to get the democratic party to be responsive to progressive ideals than to allow it to move further to the right than it's ever been.

I mean WTF are people thinking here? Joe's only sin is he is too nice to the corporate interests, and he is too hard line on MidEast issues with regard to Israel. But besides that, he is a LIBERAL!
NO matter, America would never elect such a whiny wimp as POTUS. :eyes:

52. Precisely
A choice between two Republicans is no choice at all; agreing to go along with it and vote for the less offensive Republican lends legitimacy to the de facto creation of a single party system. Sorry, I'll compromise a fair ways in my convictions to get the shrub out of power, but I will not doom future generations to single party totalitarianism to buy for myself an only slightly less offensive wingnut in the White House.

When asked about Holy Joe's comments she bluntly stated that his campaign is going nowhere. How refreshing to hear the truth.

8. Fortunately, Sen Lieberman is trying really, really hard
to make sure that we are not in this situation. And for that, I thank him. Today among other things - he apparently waxed poetic on the end of "big government"... thus the solution to uninsured poor people is to let them "BUY" into medicare (that minimum wage job - really gives you a great deal of latitude in terms of extra money to buy medicare).

He seems to be in overdrive, of late, pitching to independents (who don't vote in Dem primaries), and alienating more and more dems. Its as if he wants to avoid putting many voters in the akward position of voting for him - if they really believe that it is not in their best interest, but at least it isn't as bad for them as voting for Bush.

16. I'm a moderate Dem and I'd never vote for
Lieberman, Kucinich or Sharpton if nominated.

If Lieberman is running this far to the right in the DEMOCRATIC primary, imagine how much farther he'll move to the right in the general election! Lieberman was once a centrist who had a pretty good voting record on Democratic issues, but he's starting to sound like a conservative Republican (as opposed to Repub-lite). Joe is letting himself be led by Al From and the far right wing of the DLC. Honestly, I get the feeling that if Joe gets the nomination he will run to the RIGHT of Bush. Lieberman has done that before. To win his senate seat he ran to the right of his Republican opponent.

I wouldn't vote for Kucinich either in the general. He's way to far to the left. If I wanted communism I'd swim to Cuba.

Sharpton's brand of racially divisive politics infuriates me. Sure his one liners sound good -- especially if you don't know what he's really about. He exploits African-Americans for his own self promotion and makes a mockery of the civil rights movement, IMO.

Aside from those three, I'd vote for any of the other six Democratic candidates if they were to receive the nomination. I would never vote Green. If one of the three above get it I'd write in Al Gore.

This really bothers me.

"I wouldn't vote for Kucinich either in the general. He's way to far to the left. If I wanted communism I'd swim to Cuba."

*note this is not a flame I'm just spouting off my thoughts.

1. If people would stop being complete a**holes and start acting human, nobody would go that far left because it wouldn't be necessary.

2. Communist is a bit of a stretch. Socialist MAYBE.

3. All of this label nonsense is nothing more than philosophy about how a country ought to work, There's good and bad in every last one. I don't support DK because he's a Democrat, Progressive, Liberal, Green or whatever tag anyone wants to stick on him. I support DK because I believe he can do what he says he can do, and I like the sound of it all.

Whew! That was new and different. And I think I better go to bed now, before I show ya just how kooky I REALLY can be!

is if the other 8 candidates are all aboard a plane that crashes into a mountain.

Peter Camejo has a better chance at becoming Governor of California than Lieberman has in winning a single primary, much less win the nomination.

But, does anyone want to see just how much damage Shrub can do in another four years?

Really, say he does get it... Are you really going to vote for the Green, or the Socialist Worker, or anyone else, just to protest him and guarantee four more years of THIS.

...e.g. abortion and the environment.

However, on my number one issue, Lieberman is not Bush lite - he is Bush, period - namely, atheists' rights and separation of church and state. The bastard not only spoke vehemently against Newdow vs. Congress - an inexcusable act IMO - but also said "atheists have no morals."

So, as a person without morals, I will not bring myself to voting for Holy Joe.

Have you noticed the true believers on the right that think former Governor Bush isn't conservative enough?

A center right Democrat will not get the Progressive vote and therefore lose in 2004.

56. tell me more about your reasoning
A republican congress and Lieberman = ? vs a republican congress and bush = ?

I am guessing that this is because if things keep going poorly due to repub policy as would likely be the case with either man in the WH (not that Lieberman would endorse all actions - but that he wouldn't be able to stop it) - that at least with a full flush (re: both branches clearly repub) the blame goes where it belongs - and the tide might begin to turn - not in the middle (the past 20 years of fighting for indies) - but throughout as the ideologues running the GOP would turn too many people against it?

That was just my stab at trying to figure out a possible reasoning for your interesting (and unique on this thread) position.

72. hi,salin
my reasoning is this, if Lieberman should get the WH with GOP Houses then he'll have an easier time implementing more of his 'right' policies.
but, if the DEMs were take both Houses than the 'party' would be an opposition to the policies that Lieberman endorses but currently the majority of DEMs do not.

i could be wrong, of course.(and really what reason do i have for thinking this considering the opposition the DEMs have given Bush--wishful thinking maybe) the party may go along with Lieberman on everything because he is one of them, but we stand a better chance of protection ourselves than we would if the Repubs control the Congress and the Senate.

your thinking works for me too,as an aside.

59. I would do anything legal to avoid that matchup.
I really don't know if I could hold my nose tight enough to vote for holy joe.

60. Flame away if you wish,
But quite frankly if it isn't Kucinich or Sharpton as the Dem nominee, I'll be voting Green. Lieberman is a Republican in all but name, Dean is a corporate conservative in liberals' clothing, and Kerry and Edwards are nothing but DLC style corporatists.

69. absolutely
While he is not my first choice, and I doubt he is anyone else's first choice -- and I actually doubt he will be the candidate -- certainly I will support him. It is too important to get the thieves out of office. We can infight any old time.

70. Shit eatin' grinner here!
Anybody but Bush. If Lieberman gets nominated and elected (doubtful), Ashcroft, Rumsfeld,Norton, Cheney(!),various Iran-contra crooks, and a whole host of swine go away. That said, he's my least favorite Dem candidate.

71. I would have said I'd vote for him
but his most recent remarks have really pissed me off. If it looked like he had a chance to take my state, I'd hold my nose. If he's out of the running, I'd vote for a 3rd party. (don't assume Green)

I can't stand the guy - if the Dem. party nominates him, I would consider it the final betrayal - I would rescind my membership.

73. I would probably have to hold my nose
with a set of vise-grips, but even Lieberman would be better than *.

74. Totally mute
Not only will he not be the nominee, he'll be the second or third to go (after DK and right around the time BG "suspends" his campaign).
