Would you join the European Union?
Edited on Tue Aug-12-03 11:35 AM by The_Golden_Child
If a popular vote was put forward tomorrow for the United States to remain an independant Republic or to join the European Union, what would you vote for and why?

Also, how did everyone feel about members on the Supreme Court recently citing judicial precedent from other Nations in some decisions?

Edit for spelling...

1. Boy would that cause telecom problems :)
On a social or political level, sure, I'd vote to join...

But there are so many VAST infrastructure differences that would have to be addressed before it could effectively happen. Just in telecom alone there are thousands of standards and practices in the EU that aren't recognized here in the US.

Converting that infrastructure, which was part of the EU's origins, would be a 50 year project (if we're lucky).

Though, it'd be cool to have a pocket full of Euros.

2. Problemattic
I'm not sure about giving up soverignty. I can't think that would be a very popular idea here in the US. I'm also not sure our interests are the same as those nations in Europe; in fact I know they conflict in many cases. There may be people on here who would be comfortable letting the EU call the shots, but I am not one of them, I am afraid.

I think a EU style set up in the Americans might be closer to the right direction--but such an organization would be dominated by us, so not sure if that's a great idea either.

5. No, but I'd love to join the EU as an individual!
Frankly, I think the US needs to be excluded from regional cooperative unions: they're the only hope the world has of resisting total US hegemony. Even assuming a less imperialistic administration running the US, absolute power corrupts absolutely; there must be some checks on the US' status as the sole global superpower. So I want to keep the US as far away as possible from the EU, ASEAN, etc., and would ideally like to see us withdraw from NATO. But I would certainly like to join the EU as an individual citizen - anyone know how I can get a visa? :)

6. But would you join the Euro?
Now that is one subject that does not half rile up UK conservatives! The British Conservative party is essentially a single issue party, and that issue is the EU.

8. No Way we should let Europe Run Europe WE have our hands full
No Way we shold let Europe Run Europe and we have our hands full running our country and our American Colony (IRAQ. Plus we have to much say so in world affairs as it is anymore power would just make more people not like us. Esp when someone like Clinton or Gore is not in power.

9. This is an interesting subject. Maybe each state should join or not join.
Secede to the EU. I do believe that this would be a novel idea.

This country is toast with Fascist in rule and a complacent
citizenry.

But there are several states that might chose to join.

Yes I do believe the Supreme Court should allow other opinions from other nations to
enter in their opinions as well.
(Maussoui is one of them.)

10. Should we consider citing foreign precedent...
just a little bit more? I'm a little afraid of setting the precedent of citing foreign precedents. Activist courts can cut both ways, you know. What if the Repugs nominate the next two SC justices, and with their court majority start citing radically right foreign court decisions?

11. Secession
Was decided about 150 years ago. States can't do it.

No, we are Americans, not Europeans.

12. My gut feeling, and my intellect, agree with you...
That's why personally, although I may have liked the particular ideas they were espousing, I am a bit fearful of the recent, openly admitted, citings of foreign precedent by members of the Supreme Court. How did you feel about those MuddleOfTheRoad?

14. I am extremely concerned about them
Had I been in Congress, I'd be looking up ways to impeach a member of the Court. But then again, that wouldn't be the first time I'd do that, now would it?

You notice in the U.S. the move is towards SMALLER GOVERNMENT, and statetments like The era off big government is over.

Well EVERY European Nations government percentage of its gross domestic product is far larger than the U.S.'s, and the U.S falls Dead last in standard of living, has the highest percentage of its population living in poverty, has by far the lagest percentage of its population living in malnutrition or starvation according to Bread for the world,it middle class beginning to shrink, its poor beginning to expand, has almost as high an infant mortality rate as some of the developing countries, has more people die of preventable conditions due to lack of adequate health care. THe gap betwwen the welathiest and the poorest gets larger and larger, the real wages of the worker falling. The average European actually LIVES the good life the middle class in the U.S. strives for daily.

Yet which candidates are at the TOP of the polls.

Those dedicated to the fiscal conservatism that is the agent of such conditions.

Big Government, Goverment directed Socially RESPONSIBLE capitalism is the true road to real democracy, as without a narrorwing of the gap between the obscenely welathy, and the middle class, the welathy will ALWAYS be able to buy tailor made government policy, while the average voter will always live in an 'off the rack" world.

What is needed is for Democrats who are not afraid to balance the budget by being "TAX AND SPEND" democrats, and to be able to translate this message into one that shows the average American how this, and not tax cuts to the rich, is in their best interest.

The "FISCAL CONSERVATIVES" are the real "sell outs" to democratic principals, and the party, not the DLC. They have sold the middle class into slavery to corporate interests.
