In a March 1999 interview with Wolf Blitzer, Gore said
"During my service in the United States Congress, I took the initiative in creating the Internet." This was in response to a question along the lines of "What legislative accomplishments are you proud of" or "What can you claim as accomplishments during your time in the Senate?"
Blitzer didn't even blink. That's because it was obvious that Gore was saying his action as a Senator fostered the early growth of what would become the internet. He took the initiative in the fostering the creation of the internet from a governmental perspective. This is absolutely true, and he should be proud of it.
The oft-described "Father of the Internet", Vincent Cerf, is quoted as saying "The Internet would not be where it is in the United States without the strong support given to it and related research areas by the Vice President in his current role and in his earlier role as Senator." Al Gore also coined the term "Information Superhighway" in his early writings on the subject, before it existed as we know it.
