Poll suggests public worried over economy

The Associated Press
8/12/2003, 11:14 p.m. ET

(AP) — Almost three-fourths of Americans think the current national budget deficit is a problem, a poll says.

The Washington Post poll on the newspaper's Web site Tuesday night said 73 percent think it is a problem and 23 percent think it is not.

Just over half in the poll, 52 percent, said President Bush bears a good amount of responsibility for the deficit. That's up from 41 percent who felt that way in January 2002.

Asked which political party they trust to do a better job of handling the economy, 47 percent said Democrats and 37 percent said Republicans. In December 2002, they were evenly split between Democrats and Republicans.

1. reality rearing its ugly head in the polls?!
by now unemployment must have touched dam near every family and household, if not directly then thru friends and relatives...

and bush has no one to blame but his own administration. it's too late now even if things should begin to turn around. the bush administration will go down in history as the only one since hoover to lose jobs.

6. I know, that 52% who think Bush may have a large part to do with
the deficit is amazing to me...and the fact that it's just going up after all this time...

I keep wondering why people are so dumb in this country?? Or have the media and Dems just not making the link clear enough, although to me, it's been clear enough.

3. Good News for Dean
After all, he has a record of balancing budgets through not one but two Bush recessions.

4. the poll
Strange that his approval on Iraq is actually 3% lower than his overall rating, that tells me he still has some kind of a likeablity working in his favor. But so did his father, and it did not last.

Also, lets be careful of using the deficit as an issue. Do you really want to make the deficit an issue when Republicans control all branches? Come to Texas to see how the budget is balanced when Republicans run the whole show.
