Poll question: How comfortable are you now with Kerry as the nominee?
Edited on Tue Jun-01-04 03:16 PM by Delano
I was a Deaniac before Dean-mania was cool, and I got off the bandwagon just before the "scream", but I never had much of a problem with Kerry other than his IWR vote, and his explanation of it has somewhat dampened my misgivings on that point.

I'm happy and confident with Kerry as our nominee. How about you?

1. I was a Gephardt supporter
Edited on Tue Jun-01-04 03:15 PM by sirjwtheblack
Kerry hasn't fully won me over yet, but I understand it's a calculated campaign tactic to lay low and let Bush kick his own ass for a while.

on edit: I'm absolutely voting for Kerry no matter what.

4. I was a Dean supporter and I agree with everything sirjwtheblack said.
I don't think that Kerry has really begun to campaign yet, and that's fine with me. I'll absolutely support him and vote for him and encourage everyone else to do so. I've already sent money to Kerry's campaign.

2. I supported somebody else in the primaries,
and still have serious misgivings about Kerry.

I'll vote for Kerry. I have a Kerry bumper sticker. I try to talk people into voting for Kerry, but really, I despise our candidate.

Starting November 3rd, I expect to be protesting Kerry, but in the meantime, all that matters is getting Bush out of there.

5. Despise? Wow.
Some elaboration would have been nice as to why...

The only president I've ever despised is Dumbya. Even Nixon and Reagan were just "strong dislike"...

35. Yes, despise
The only difference between how I feel about Bush and how I feel about Kerry is the degree.

I hope there is more to his policies than meets the eye.
He is not reaching out to young people, that could be a fatal
error.

23. I don't quite "despise" him yet
but I'm getting pretty close to feeling that way (I throughly despise Bush*, and that's the only reason I'll be voting for Kerry). Nothing he has said has inspired me, and I doubt that America will be radicallly improved with a Kerry presidency (somewhat, I'm sure). Worst of all, I don't think he can win because most of the non-DU dems I know really hate the guy -which puts me in a situation where I'm defending someone I don't believe in, and I kind of resent that.:-(

30. Me too I resent the hell out of it.
And then to be preached to here as being "too far left" or whatever the buzzword for people who have very low expectations of Kerry is these days. Only if I had not bothered paying attention for the last 10 years could I believe that Kerry is anything but part of the problem.

I can't even make an arguement FOR Kerry with a straight face. I can only try to convince people Bush is so bad anything will be better. Does not make one proud to be a Democrat that is certain.

11. Kerry is okay
He's always had my respect, but I'm not enthusiastic about him. Let me get on my soap box again and say that you don't have to be enthusiastic about Kerry if you find a local Democrat you can be enthusiastic about go and support them and Kerry will also benefit. There are many other important races besides the Presidential one.

12. There's still a major bloc of Dems who don't like Kerry one bit...
And this poll proves it, IMO. That's not to say they won't vote for him, but we might lose several depending on Kerry's VP choice.

Anyway, I glad to see this poll as it confirms my belief that still about 30-40% of DU is not really behind Kerry or just plain sick of him.

Based on past poll / vs / reality, you have to take the Kerry Anxiety figures down half. I still contend that 15-20% of Dems nation-wide either can't stand Kerry as the nominee or have some serious misgivings.

It will be interesting to see if Kerry can "up" his numbers, which seems to be the trend right now. I doubt he'll win over everyone, but he wants a chance to win, he'd better knock his negative numbers down significantly.

It was slow and grudging, but he's won me over. Sen. Kerry is a man of great intellect and depth, and I will enthusiastically work for his election as POTUS.

18. I supported DK in the primaries, now I'm trying to shift over to Kerry
It's been hard. I've read through a lot of his campaign site, watched some speeches, and I can tell he's far more the statesman than what we have now. But there's a long way to go before I can enthusiastically support him. I'm probably going to volunteer at Kerry's campaign headquarters, esp. since they're only a few blocks from my home, but so far he's made it difficult for me to jump on his bandwagon.

19. I liked Kerry but but
His lack of smiles and charisma has failed me.

He has experience which I love.

He is tough. He has mental agility.

So did Carter.

He has not displayed humility.

His life record is his greatest asset. He has been a good person.

It is Silver Star versus a Texas Souffle.

An honest man versus a pathological liar.

A successful man versus one who never succeeded at anything by himself.

A man who stands on his own feet versus one who is controlled by PNAC and ATR Gangs.

Clark as V-P. Looks good from here. Dean is also great.

If he does not select one of those he is making a terrible mistake.

21. Other. I'll be voting to get rid of bush* -- period.
Kerry just happens to be the tool at hand for doing so. I fully expect to be working just as hard under a Kerry presidency to take America back for the People. The big difference is that Kerry is at least not insane, and we won't be battling from as far behind as we would be under another bush* term.

Electing Kerry solves nothing beyond the immediate problem of halting the bush* regime. That should be EVERYONE'S first priority. I don't need to like Kerry, I don't need to parse his every policy position, none of it matters to me. He's basically just another ruling class imperialist, as would be ANY mainstream Dem -- it's the nature of the current system.

My stance is, get rid of bush* and then get to work on the long haul.

22. I Think Kerry Will be a great president, but.....
He's running such a laid-back campaign, I wonder if he'll get the opportunity! I agree with the poster who says Kerry should reach out to young people. He always looks like he's on his way to the office!

Maybe some late night TV appearances and speaking at colleges - not much $$ to be made but could get some votes(?)!!

24. I supported Dean and was disappointed...
when he lost the nomination but Kerry has won me over because I believe he is an extremely intelligent and capable person who will do the best job for this country.

There is no question in my mind that Kerry will be a good president --he may even become one of the greatest. Right now he is trying to appeal to a broad base of Democrats, some moderate Republicans and Independents who don't agree on a lot of things but are united because of a visceral dislike of Bush. He is trying to stay above the fray by appearing presidential in his ads and is handling himself with dignity and poise on his campaign tours.

By staying positive, Kerry is positioning himself to gain the trust of the swing voters and former Bush voters who are disillusioned with the Commander-in-Thief.

36. I've been a Kerry fan for years.
Being from Massachusetts, I saw the Kerry-Weld Senate race in '96, and I was amazed how he handled himself in that race. I've since become aware of his record, and there has never been another candidate I would like to see in the Oval Office more than Kerry.
