Protest in Guadalajara..police repression..
Some stories are trickling out of Guadalajara about violence towards protestors, brutal treatment in jail. The BBC article referenced here http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=102&topic_id=590020 seems to hint that no one knows what the protests were about.

The Indymedia sites aren't doing a much better job of explaining it, at least not to people who don't speak Spanish. Some of the coverage has English translation but much of it does not..so any Spanish speakers who can help, please do so.

Some pretty dramatic photos

Can DUers help expand this story? The radio reports on KPFT about the protest and the arrests have been limited, but it seems that there are some brave poor people putting themselves on the line, without much protection. It would be helpful to flesh out this story, if we can.

1. Seems to be an
anti-globalization protest, from what I can gather.

2. They've obviously never been drunk in Tijuana
The police beating people? Brutal treatment in jail? I apologize in advance if this sounds in any way discriminatory, but that's standard operating procedure in much of Mexico. If you really want to see brutality, read up on Chiapas and the crimes the Mexican army has perpetrated there.

IMO, Mexico is a fundamentally corrupt country. Most of the nations population is so poor that they'll obey anyone willing to put cash in their pockets and food on their table, and this has given the criminal underground an immense amount of power and has allowed bribery to rule much of their government.

If there's anything shocking about this, it's that these protesters actually assumed that they could protest without being beaten. You can barely get away with that in the U.S. anymore...in Mexico, they should be happy that they haven't been shot at yet.
