About Rep. Herseth...

Chandler was able to eliminate any serious November competition with his handy victory in February. Herseth, on the other hand, will be bedeviled by Diedrich for the next five months straight. The GOP came too close to give November up without a fight. Herseth has become the Dems' most endangered incumbent. In fact, expect a wedge vote in the House designed specifically to put her in a bind. Some of you may not like it, but we're going to see some Republican-lite out of Herseth in the coming months. It's the only chance we'll have to hold the seat.

1. So it starts already...

... I was at the Steph Herseth rally at the Sioux Falls Sheraton Tuesday night, it was a fantastic time, but then it was my first, as it was for others I visited with.

Getting to the point(s) you bring up, I think we can count on it. But one thing that has to be considered is that South Dakota tends to have a Republican bend to it, and if Steph is put into such a predicament, as long as it is for the benefit of South Dakota, I can't see it hurting her. I also am sure that if such a situation/publicity stunt should happen, Steph and her office will be able to deal with it, perhaps even pre-empting it with a great online newsletter like Tim Johnson puts out every week detailing what and why he voted in such a way and what other populist projects he is working on(Tim has been a big proponent of water development for South Dakota). It all depends on what comes out of the rest of this Congress, which leads me back to where you started. LOL

It is hard to come up with a solid response at this time, as we do not know what will be thrown at us. The topic and type of the "wedge" vote that may or may not be foisted upon Steph will dictate the response. That is all I can come up with right now.

I do think that Rep. Herseth will find the GOP, especially Rove, gunning for her.

... she was standing right behind me, midway between the press stage (lights) and the podium. Kept on bumping into me dancing around and seemed to be having a great time. She may have me in a group picture, I had never met or seen them before and I got pulled in to a group of five ladies that insisted I stand behind them with the big Steph Herseth sign (my idea). :headbang:

13. The GOP took over Florida through the 90s because Dems were afraid.

They did not vote their consciences. It will continue to happen unless we stand for what we believe.

Our congressmen and legislators became afraid of being made fun of, and they en masse joined the Republican party. And if they did not join, they voted with them for fear of not being elected.

Now we have almost no Democrats in office here. It did not work well here to be just like them.

5. She should vote Republican for the next 5 months

It's worth it for her to keep the seat. It is so difficult to actually pick up a Repub seat in the House. Let's not give this one up.

do that and lose ALL the votes she just got. I see no reason why people would turn around and vote differently five months from now. Now that she has a position of power it is up to her to explain why the Democrats agenda is WAY better for the citizens .

16. Bashing Herseth...

is pointless.

If South Dakota didn't run people like Herseth and Daschle, that "give in" sometimes, it'd be 2 Republicans. This state has been BLOOD RED for a long time.

10. I was bothered when I learned she wanted money from the Dean org..

as a Dean Dozen, and was just about to be accepted. Then her campaign said they did not want to acknowledge Dean's support, but wanted the money. DFA said no.

I realize the philosophy right now is to vote with the GOP and try not to offend them so as to win. I disagree, and I only donate to those who are not ashamed of Dean's support.

I am sure she is a lovely lady, and I can almost read the comments to this:
I will hear that I do not understand, that we have to be like them to win.
I say baloney to that.

She wanted his support, but did not want to acknowledge him. There is no way to justify that.

I think you know you are. I will continue to vote for Democrats. I have said that. I reserve the right to criticize our candidates. When I can no longer question policy, then our country is no longer free.

I happen to disapprove of the policy of trying to be more like them to win. I am furious that our Democrats distanced themselves from Gore and Dean. That is just wrong. They are both good men and good Democrats.

If you would take time to read what I said, you would see you misinterpreted.

17. It's amazing - they want Dean's "quiet" support

She best wise up. Remember the Texas Rangers and all the other grassroots efforts, and that's above and beyond the money.

14. The challenger conceded the day before the election

in essence. But the vote came within 2 points. This was discussed in the Kos article. If he hadn't, he might have won.

Apparently, Herseth did not have a good GOTV effort. That's going to be needed to hold the seat in November.
