Why is Free Republic still in existence?
I would have thought Freepers would have all enlisted and be in Afghanistan and Iraq. Guess not. Other priorities.

9. Not
around these parts. If you listen to teachers, media (left and right) House members, Senate members etc...
The good ol USA has always been a democracy and not a Constitutional Republic. So if we are a democracy than majority rules!!!

7. You must have never been to Fresno
Now, before anyone tries to defend Fresno, I live here.

We have Bubba from Heat of the night as the mayor. We cannabalize our downtown to build up north. The government is in bed with the builders, who are building way beyond our means. We spend millions on a 7 mile stretch of highway but have no effective mass transit system. The big complaint is that the buses are ugly because they have to sell ads in order to survive.

Meanwhile, letters to the editors have people writing stuff like "I enlisted for WWII. . .George Bush is not a liar. . .Our media is left wing" The whole town is brainwashed.

Driving down the 99, there are signs "Abortion is murder". Our air quality is THE WORST IN CALIFORNIA but we do NOTHING to fix it. Our city councilman wrote "I'd like a dirty bomb to use on the liberals". the same guy complained because arts and entertainment funding was used to support the gay and lesbian film festival because "there are no sidewalks".

With a mindset like this, it is no wonder the free republic not only survives but thrives.

10. From another SJ Valley-ite
Grew up in Bakersfield, so I know what you're talking about. I drove up 99 to Modesto last summer and couldn't believe all the anti-choice signs.

I was suprised however when I was in Bakerfield this past weekend I didn't see a lot of Shubbie stickers. But I did get a few dirty looks for my Kerry one on my car.

13. Billboards
are private and should be protected with free speech. Even if they are anti-abortion\pro-killing or pro-choice.
All forms of govt. are in bed with special interest groups from greenpeace and peta to the nra.
If people don't want mass transit, what can you do? Take away their rights?
Your letter to the editors are common all across the country.
If public money is used for some groups then it should be for all groups. And churches are nothing but groups.

15. I don't want to take away billboards
Billboards are not only free speech the are also a looking glass into the thoughts of that society.

For example, in LA the billboards have lots of Movie advertisements. Here we like to have billboards about NEW HOMES.

My comments were a general rant about the mindset of Fresnans. Your rebuttal does nothing to show the mindset is any different.

The excuse that everyone else does it too is really sad--that is how Americans excused the abuse at the Iraqi prison.

I know the letter is common but it is again a sign that the free republic survives in Fresno (as oppossed to San Francisco) because of the mindset expressed in the letter.

To clarify Jerry Duncan's opposition to the Gay/Lesbian Film festival. Money was given to a group to distribute as they saw fit to promote understanding of other cultures.

When part of the money was granted to the film Festival, Jerry Duncan then went on about how there were no sidewalks in parts of fresno, people were hungry and homeless, why are we supporting a film festival?

The issue is that the money, if not used for the film festival, would not have been used to feed the homeless either (because the grant was to promote cultural understanding). There are other funds in the budget for that.

Where you went by bringing in churches, I have no idea. . .

23. Love your response
Thank you!
I wasn't implying that because everyone does it, that makes it ok.
About the money issue, I don't believe public tax dollars should be given out to special interest groups and the such... I was just stating that if it is ok to do this, then churches should also be considered because the too are nothing but a special interest group.

17. Central Valley in da house!
Fresno gave birth to FreeRepublic, no?

Any how, Congrats to you for staying in Fresno, MsUnderstood! When my parents finally leave the H-Bomb (hanford) I doubt I'll make it back there very often if at all. Good to know there are some survivors there to combat the Freeper elements.

24. There are very few people left on FR
They banned some of their more, er, "colorful" members when Bush started taking over the GOP - no criticism of Israel was allowed, so there went all of the Jewish Banker Conspiracy Freepers. Then when Lott was taken down, the rank and file anti-Black bigots lost interest. When people started to realize Bush was far, far from conservative, the old-line paleo-cons started deserting. Since their bump after 911, it's been all downhill from there.
