What happened to the Attack on Kirkuk ? MSNBC/CNN not Reporting..
Edited on Wed Jun-02-04 04:25 PM by KoKo01
I just checked the first 20 minutes of each show and Blitzer had the Iraq Correspondent mentioning what happened today and not a peep about Kirkuk.

MSNBC didn't have anything, either. Was it a false report? Reuters/Yahoo/BBC all reported it. What gives?

Here are links, it's also in LBN here on DU.

US Kirkuk base 'rocked by blasts'
A series of explosions has rocked a US base in the northern Iraqi oil city of Kirkuk, reports say.

Iraqi police said the blasts followed a rocket strike, apparently on an ammunition store at the base.

The US military said no casualties had been reported so far in the blasts, which had resulted in a fire.

A reporter from Reuters news agency said he saw shells and rockets light up the night sky over the base as the area became covered in thick smoke.

The blast happened at about 2200 local time (1800 GMT).

Local residents said explosions were continuing every 10 to 15 minutes, almost two hours after the intial blast.

A US military spokesman said a round had impacted near the base, starting a fire which then spread to an ammunition holding area.

There has been a recent upsurge of violence in the area, a key part of Iraq's northern oilfields.

2. There's probably a blackout on the news from there
It's happened numerous times when there was some really nasty shit going down.

Then suddenly a few days later, the official dead count goes up.

4. Here's more and another link:
You can see rockets flying and landing all over the base," reporter Adnan Hadi said. "The windows of buildings close to the base have all been shattered."

US military spokespersons in Baghdad said they were unaware of the incident. US officials in Kirkuk could not be reached.

"A Katyusha rocket hit an arms store," district police chief Borhan Taeb Taheb told Reuters.

Taheb said he knew of no casualties among civilians outside the base which covers a very wide area. No ambulance or fire trucks were seen moving in the city, which was under curfew.

Kirkuk, 250km north of Baghdad, is the industrial hub of Iraq's vital northern oilfields. There has been considerable violence there in recent months, notably between rival communities of Arabs, Kurds and Turkmen.
