What is the impetus behind Bush hiring a lawyer?

The latest news was quite the shock to me.

Is it reasonable to assume that there is a movement underway to investigate Bush for treason? Or is that too much to assume right now?

Anyone have any idea why Bush needs representation? I'd like to hear all your speculation. Thanks!

he may or may not be called in front of a grand jury in the Plame case. If he is, he's too damn dumb to speak for himself. Hence the mouthpiece.

A personal lawyer or Presidential counsel? If personal, there must be something very interesting going on behind the scenes.

I've often thought that if he went, it would be sudden and with negotiated cover unrelated to the actual reason.

7. Im not getting my hopes up....

...I suspect it has something to do with the Plame investigation, but that has been dragging on now. Bush might be questioned, but Im not getting my hope up that he will be direclty implicated if anything should come of this.

As Ive said before, the Plame investigation will only become a big scandal if some high-level people, like Scooter Liddy, are indicted. Just wrapping up the investigation without anything proven or any smoking guns that would lead to an indictment really wont hack it.

Its going to have to be real legal action that blows this up into a scandal, and real lega action against high level and key adivsors with direct connections to Cheney or Bush.

but I think that people should be EXTREMELY careful about pushing the idea that hiring a lawyer is an indicator of wrongdoing. That's a VERY dangerous genie to let out of the bottle.

I'm sure that this motion by Bush will be deemed "no big deal", when back in the Clinton years he was castigated fiercely for hiring a private lawyer.

The freeps either have a very short memory or a relativistic sense of morality...or both.

One reason Bunnypants has to lawyer up is thanks to his beloved Supreme Court allowing investigations to take place on a sitting pResident or other members of his regime.

Sounds like his Assholiness could be called in front of a grand jury...which means this probe is getting awfully close to home; methinks Scooter Libby is changing his underware at very frequent intervals today. Right now MessyNBC is attempting to downplay this thing...but the fact that the investigation has gotten this "hot" is newsworthy.

This regime could attempt to fight it with "Executive Privilidge" and stonewall as they have in other investigations, but the lesson from both Watergate and the Clinton Inquisition is whenever in doubt, lawyer up...especially if you know you could be hauled in to testify or on the short list.

Nope, not a good thing for the evil empire. Could be nothing, as I can't see Fitzgerald, a Repugnican, calling Bunnypants to testify before November, if at all.

14. I am confident

that the shit is going to hit the fan in this case towards mid-July. It is going to create a vacancy in the office of the vice president. I agree fully with the person who warned against making any judgements because a person (even a president) hires an attorney. This case is not going to involve bush directly -- first, it's very unlikely he had prior knowledge, and second, even if he took part in the aftermath, others will protect him. But not cheney. This involves Rove, cheney, and others. Buy a bottle of good wine, etc, and mark it July 14th. On that day, I believe you will lift a glass, and say the Water Man was right!

My brother-in-law has been frustrated for many months because this issue has not received the attention it deserves. I've told him over and over that it gets HUGE in mid-July. I am very impressed with Wilson's book, and loved John Dean's review in the 5-23 NYTimes Book review: "Don't Tread on Joseph Wilson." He notes the federal grand jury, and the on-going white house attempts to discredit Wilson in the media. The administration, Dean says, "should understand that they have picked a fight with the wrong fellow."

We talk on DU about MI and CIA etc. And not always in terms of endearment. That's okay, because there are obvious problems. But we should never underestimate the problems this administration has created for itself when it has consistently blamed others such as the CIA for its errors. What they did to Wilson's wife was terrible. Wrong group of people to threaten.

I know that it marks the beginning of the French Revolution, and I associate it with the Bastille fortress. That had been used to "house" political prisoners in times before the Revolution?

It's also on or about St. Swithin's Day in Ireland. There is a belief that is as old as the Bastille fortress that is associated with a meteorological prophecy: if it rains that day, it will bring 40 days and 40 nights of rain .....

It seems that it is a Celtic "holy day." We'll have a toast that day, for sure!
