2. Hugo Chavez is the leader of the 4th largest supplier of oil in the world
To not pay attention to what's happening in Venezuela is a myopic world view given these "oil-charged" times.

3. That would be fine if there were REAL discussions
And not really dumb polls asking whether you respect Chavez or some Dem politician more.

11. I'd like to see a REAL EFFORT among some here to learn what's going on.
Edited on Thu Jun-03-04 09:28 AM by AP
And if you all don't care about the issue and don't care to learn, then don't post on it.

BTW, parody can be a very powerful way to argue a point.

Furthermore, VZ is the leading edge of neoliberalism vs anti-neoliberalism, and Americans should understand the issue, and if we're going to have our liberal shit down, here's the place to think about it.

"First They Came for the Jews"
By Pastor Niemoller

First they came for the Jews and I did not speak out because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for the Communists and I did not speak out because I was not a Communist.

Then they came for the trade unionists and I did not speak out because I was not a trade unionist.

Then they came for me and there was no one left to speak out for me

10. Damage that can't be undone
If Venezuela is led back to an oligarchy and recognized before Kerry is inaugurated, the damage can't be undone and we have a cartel member not in the hands of OPEC but in the hands of BFEE OPEC, an oppressed nation with nothing that can be done that wouldn't be better with Chavez as an independent moving toward better democracy and his nation's true interests.

North Korea, oddly is still the disaster we don't want to face. If that gets rolling what will Kerry be left with? If a terror attack sets Bushco, with Kerry dragged along again, against some other target, another bit or irreversible damage will be done. And so on.

We are on the cusp of irreversible environmental damage, democratic, economic, population issue(health- aging crisis) as well as electoral tyranny. Everything must be defended or at least "cared" about.

As for Kerry jeopardizing Chavez(therefore Venezuela itself) by principled, untimely concerns about democracy, that is not a good thing even if it helps the general cause. I used to grant our leaders with knowing what they are doing in that regard. Have been burned nearly every time, all the more with the goons in charge now.

21. 1900-30s British Imperialism->low salaries->outsourcing jobs to India 2000
You better care about neoliberalism, because it's going to kill the US working class pretty soon.

We're fighting for power to the people all over the world so that all power doesn't flow to the biggest corporations. And we are afraid fo that because if imense power does flow to those corporations, they are going to continue to spend American democracy into oblivion at home.

How do you think Bush's oil company friends got the money to buy him off? By ripping off the people of Venezuela and Nigeria and Nepal and preventing them from having middle classes who would demand through political power that more money flow to the people of their countries rather than to Texans.

It just baffles me that people who like Democrats enough to post here can't figure out why it's important for countries all over the world to have societies like the one we want in American -- one in which people who WORK FOR A LIVING GET TO KEEP A BIGGER PIECE OF THE WEALTH THEY'RE WORKING THEIR ASSES OFF TO CREATE.

U.S. intervention in Latin America going back to the Spanish-American War. There may be some instances in which it was beneficial, but I certainly can't think of any right now.

On edit: I just remembered the Mexican War, which goes back to the 1840s. We got some nice, warm and sunny real estate out of that, but the way we did it is nothing to be proud of.

16. Good point. Absolutely right.
If you actually know something ABOUT the situation, you will care, and care a lot.

Only the ones who believe ignorant yammerings and the crudest propaganda feel indifferent.

Smarter folks suspect there's more going on, and try to find out.
