IT HAD BECOME A FULL-BLOWN RECESSION WITHIN 45 DAYS OF MY ASSUMING THE PRESIDENCY. AT THAT JUNCTURE IN TIME, I HAD YET TO IMPLEMENT ANY BUDGET OR FISCAL PLAN. THE ECONOMY AT THAT TIME WAS STILL OPERATING UNDER CLINTONIAN BUDGETS AND PRINCIPLES. (i..e. TAX HIKES 1993). THIS SLOW DOWN IN THE ECONOMY FURTHER ERODED ANY POSSIBLE "SURPLUS". SEPTEMBER 11 FURTHER STALLED GDP WHICH IN TURN GREATLY REDUCED THE REVENUES COMING INTO THE GOVERNMENT, AS EVERYONE SHOULD BE ABLE TO UNDERSTAND! No one EVER said Saddam never had a "weapons program." We know he had one--we have the bills of lading and receipts.

Okay, let's try this again, children:

1. Saddam Hussein had a weapons program. We knew he had one. We sold him chemical weapons precursors, biological weapons seed stock, and equipment at a time when Iraq was actively using chemical weapons against Iran. Why? Because at the time, the Ayatollah Khomeini's Iran was considered to be worse than Saddam Hussein's Iraq, and the US has always followed the "the enemy of my enemy is my friend" doctrine that allied us with Josef Stalin in World War II.

2. In 1990, Saddam Hussein invaded Kuwait because the United States, through Ambassador to Iraq April Glaspie, told him he could. We then went into Saudi Arabia, executed a massive military buildup, and ran the Iraqi Army back out of Kuwait. After this war, Saddam was told he had to get rid of his weapons program. This he did.

3. In 1980, the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan. After Reagan's election, our government trained a number of "mujahideen" freedom fighters to run off the Soviets; one was Osama bin Laden. They did their jobs impeccably, with result that the Soviets did leave that nation. Osama bin Laden became an anti-American terrorist after the US built military bases on his home soil, in his opinion forever besmirching Islam. (We were even sending Jews to defend his country!)

4. Bush's advisors, the Project for a New American Century, have always advised taking over Iraq. These people were planning to invade Iraq since before Bush was ever installed by the Supreme Court.

5. When you say Iraq wasn't cooperating with international authorities...all I can say is you're wrong. In fact, the UN inspection teams marveled at the level of cooperation Saddam exhibited. The UN inspectors found no chemical weapons--none!--and the Iraqis gave them unfettered access to anywhere they wanted to look. And in fact, just before the invasion was launched, Saddam even offered to resign and leave the country peacefully. Bush would have none of that.

6. Now that we have invaded Iraq and have had full access to everything, what have we found? Some rusty machine parts buried under a bush in a scientist's backyard, and two ancient chemical rounds, sized to fit the American howitzers we sold Saddam, that didn't have any chemicals in them.

FIGHTING WARS AND APPEASING LEFTISTS WHO WANT GOVERNMENT TO PAY FOR EVERYTHING HAS HAD A HUGE PRICE TAG!

The issue is that spending must be paid for. Repealing even a fraction of the wealthiest's tax cut would have helped; rolling it back would have gone a long way. It's the combination of increased spending and decreased revenues that makes the debt soar.
