June 4, 2004 — BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Four U.S. soldiers were killed when their vehicle came under attack in eastern Baghdad Friday, bringing the number of Americans killed in action since the invasion to 600, the U.S. military said.

Lunaville link has number at 823..oh I see "Killed in Action" qualifier never mind I guess those other Americans didn't REALLY die.

1. Yes, if they don't downsize it, we will have hit 1000 by November
and Disney will lose their tax breaks in Florida.

2. The mass media only spouts combat deaths
they leave out friendly fire and suicides and accidents. I guess those don't count or should i say matter to them.

3. Maybe the others were "Killed in Inaction?"
Not sure why the distinction.

Gene Taylor, D from Mississippi (yes, you read that right-- he's from the district I grew up in), found a case where Gaurdsmen were being denied Purple Hearts because their injuries were classified as non-combat, even though they were injured by a roadside bomb. When Taylor raised a fuss, the military quickly awarded Purple Hearts. But they are hiding casualties in pigeonholes that take some investigating to discover.

4. It's a mediawhore trick
KIA is killed on the field of battle. If the guy is not declared dead on teh scene and later dies at the field hospital, he is not KIA.

It's a trick to keep the number from going over 1000 before the election.

5. Dammit, I'm pretty good at understanding directions, but
I cannot figure out how to send comments to ABC from their web page. They have links referring to other links referring back to the first. Damn flimflam artists.

7. All those guys who died at Andersonville were not Civil War casualties
Because they were not on the battlefield.

And the Bataan Death March?

Not on the battlefield.

9. I thought the lunaville # WAS KIA
Are you sure ABC isn't reporting the post-"Mission Accomplished" deaths? They were all doing that for a while.

12. I thought Lunaville was total
of all causes.

This might be ABC reporting KIA since "Mission Accomplished" but it says/implies total KIA.

15. Lunaville IS total, all causes
For example, they have 6 so far for June 2004, at least one of which is a non-hostile vehicle accident.

600 is combat deaths.
223 is "non-hostile" deaths.

That's how it stands at lunaville.
