Anybody else catch this bit of news out of North Carolina? I'm still trying to figure out how I feel about it. Not an easy one to form a personal position on.

who lives in carrboro complain about the town. this art, french appreciation month, etc. i tell him he shouldn't expect any different though living so close to a university town like chapel hill.

It makes a statement that needs to be made. It's a warning. On glimpse of things to come if we keep moving to the right. I admire the courage of anyone who has the guts to make such a statement.

One of the purposes of art is to make people THINK. and it seems to me that Hunter's work has failed on that point, at least in the Chapel hill area....

unc-chapel hill alum, and let me tell ya, if you think chapel hill is liberal, you haven't seen carrboro... we affectionately call the place 'the san francisco of north carolina'... VERY artsy, very diverse and and an insanely progressive town... (in a good way of course)

i support the artist and the mayor who hangs it... trust me folks, the mayor is in no way supporting nazism (i mean, he's openly gay) that'd be insane... it's art, and he appreciates it for that... as well, it's probably symblomatic, too, of how he feels about his country right now, as i can relate... boy how i can relate...

i like how they can annihilate countries, maim and kill innocent people, but hanging a piece of artwork up, well, that's just treason! :eyes:

7. But it "Is" public property, isn't it. It's sort of a matter of trying to

have a little more consideration for other folks. If it's in his office, chosen for his own display but the town is paying for his office and it offends people maybe he should just have taken it down.

If it was his home and he wanted to hang it out his front door, I wouldn't care, nor would anyone else.

A public person should be more sensitive expecially when they are in taxpayer funded Town buildings. It's not an art gallery....(at least I didn't get the impression that Carrboro is so artsey that the Mayor's office is a gallery).

Just my 2 cents.

On edit: I just read the other two links after the first one.......describing the artist and giving some of the personal complaints.

I feel even more strongly that the Mayor and the artist should have handled it before it got to this stage. It's a matter of sensitivity when you are a politician about what all your constituents might feel.

Maybe just a nice photo of the NC Mountains or the standard view of one of UNC's buildings might have been less controversial....LOL's. A swastika in a flag might be great here on DU and most of it would understand it....but not appropriate there, to me anyway. It's too much "in your face" to be in a Town Hall.

8. it's politics

look at this the guy was only able to get 40 signatures. Carrboro has a lot of open minded people living there. If you wanted to live in the South this would be a good town you'd be around like minded folks also Asheville NC and Raleigh'wood' (as I call it) has it's pockets. I oughta know I live near Raleigh.


I don't think this is going anywhere but you know what with the CONservatives acting like a buncho' fascists anything is possible at this point.....we are after all a banana republic look at Florida and California.
