Thomas lambastes Bush on war
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Denounces policies at YWCA luncheon
By ROBERT J. McCARTHY
News Political Reporter
6/5/2004

Helen Thomas tells a Buffalo Convention Center crowd the country must regain its moral compass.

Helen Thomas played it straight for more than half a century as White House correspondent for United Press International.

But now, as a columnist for the Hearst Newspapers, Thomas is loudly voicing opinions that aim squarely at President Bush and a war in Iraq she told a Buffalo audience Friday was neither needed nor justified.

"We've lost our friends and our allies; we've let them down as a beacon of freedom because we've lost our ideals," she said. "I want to know - where is the outrage?"

Speaking to several hundred people at the YWCA of Western New York's Leader Luncheon in the Buffalo Convention Center, Thomas delivered a scathing rebuke of many of the president's policies. But she saved her sharpest barbs for the war, which she said has transformed the nation's standing in the eyes of the world.

5. Give 'em hell Helen!
I really like her! Although this article says she played it straight for a long time, she has ALWAYS been a tough reporter who asked rough questions of every President, including Kennedy (her favorite). The current crop of reporters on the WH beat should try emulating Helen...they'd do a much better job, and the American public would be better informed.
