His administration and tenure did not do one substantive thing for me. Neither does his death. Selfish? Yes, perhaps. But I am faced with the much more immediate vicissitudes of survival in the Social Darwinist world that he greatly contributed to the creation of, and I cannot ignore that.
In his final years of office, it was as clear as the nose on your face that his orientation 4x was deteriorating. It was also clear that said deterioration opened the door to many bad actions by people who, by dint of those actions, were opportunistic and greatly disloyal, by taking advantage of his condition and lack of orientation. Their covering-up of his condition, I believe, was done not so much out of loyalty to the man, but the maintenance of their cover and the creation of a fertile ground for their depredations.
He's gone now, and that just might be the kindest thing. Somewhat sadly, his mind, that kernel that defined the being, had left a number of years before. But death is natural. No one gets out alive. No one gets to turn out the lights on humankind. What is not natural is the deification of someone who was just as human, and by extension, just as flawed as you and me.
My sympathies to his family. While I am sure their measure of grief is real, I am sure that they are feeling some real sense of relief, of closure on a situation that, at times, they felt would never end, but just deteriorate into ever-descending levels of personal horror. I do so hope that those who are planning the beatification of St. Ronnie do the right thing and give them some time to address the loss and grief, before they start using his death to their own advantage.
Sadly, but not surprisingly, you just know that they will.
Rest in Peace, Mr. Reagan. I hope your hour of accounting is not too stressful.
