Vetwife stood up for civil Righs in a redneck Resturant just now !
Edited on Sat Jun-05-04 07:30 PM by vetwife
I just got mad at a local BB-Q house where a lovely black couple (elderly) waited and awaited for service. My husband and I were getting madder by the minutes as couple after couple was waited on and then I got up demanded service and whispered, "I am about to pitch a fit if you don't wait on those folks real quick, you got about 5 seconds. They took the folks order and the black couple called me over and thanked me. I would not move until they were served. I gave them my Take it Back CD and said Spread it around. They kept thanking me. I would have been as guilty as the ones doing the ignoring had I not done something.
Upon leaving, I told the management I would not be back and I and then told them I spoke everywhere. They would not get good publicity from me.
I told the kind elderly couple to listen to CD and , I try to practice what I preach ! They had tears and I ws still mad at the ownership !
Just made me feel like was in the 60's all over again !

1. good for you for standing up.
may I ask in what region of the country this occurs? Some folks think that this level of overt racism no longer exists in this country... but it rears its ugly head in all corners.

46. This shit is happening all over the coutnry. "The tone is set at the top!"
Same kind of tone and agenda was set when Ronnie was elected and it has just gotten worse. Carter and Clinton tried to make a difference but the inbred racism in this country is just too powerful. I am ashamed of most of my relatives, even the one who is in Iraq right now. He just wanted a chance to be able to kill....well, I won't even go there.

What to even say.......... we've all been waaay too complicit....... With your permission, I'm going to share your storey, as it's a poignant reminder to us all what we need to be doing.

What makes me really sad is how grateful that couple felt........ gives a sense of just how much of this they have endured in silence.

Where's that hats-off emoticon when you need it? :)

Thank you for reminding me that we all take it back one action at a time. Thank you.

This story reminds me of a story my Dad told me. When he was in the South before being sent overseas in WWII he was riding a bus either to or from the base. An elderly black woman got on the bus, and my Dad (to be)--a North Dakota farm boy who had learned his manners-- stood up to give her his seat. The bus driver yelled at him to "sit down!" Dad remained standing until the woman said, "Don't make no trouble for me white boy." My Dad sat down and then got off at the next stop and walked the remaining miles back to camp.

It didn't take the waitress but about 4..I was about to pull a Norma Rae and anybody on this site ..ask Marie 333 or Catwoman knows I am capable of it..More likely than not to do that ! During the Wingnut witchhunt of CLINTON, I was in line at one I had never been to before and there was a bulletin board with cartoons. Natcherly, they were almost all on the theme of Hillary-is-a-***** and Bill is whipped. I was engrossed with a deadly (and not laughing) concentration. When I turned to the front the owner or whoever was staring at me. From the look he got from me he KNEW I would never be back and that I would tell everybody.

60. After reading your posts, I must say
I felt humbled. There is a visualization to this picture. Imagine and for those in Georgia or most anywhere in rural southern states know this picture. Picture a little resturant that serves BBQ and steaks and catfish. Imagine it being small and nothing fancy. Imagine still, the aroma of bbq cooking and few customers, as it was only 6 PM. All white. No beer or wine is served, so there is no excuse that someone was a little tanked and overlooked the only African Americans in a place that looked like white rice.

The little frail woman and man sat down and looked around. They were not even talking. They were just waiting. The frail old gentlemen pulled out a pack of camels and lit a cigarette. Not wanting to make a fuss, he keeps noticing the waitresses buzzing from about two tables. There were a few folks in the non smoking area too but they had their own waitress. As they waitress filled our tea, and left our table, I was sure she had found time to run off to that table and take an order. People..white people gawking at the black elderly couple as the black couple held their heads hung low. I look to my husband as two couples walked in and sat right beside the black couple. The are waited on immediately.
Then a second family appears. Same thing. About the same time. I told my husband, I am about to make a scene if they don't get waited on. He said, "If you don't I will." He was just thinking the same thing as me.

I sit there and observed a couple of more minutes. I urgently removed myself from my chair. Not slowly pushed back but like there was a fire in the place. That is when I approached the lady and made my statement. Keep in mind my husband would have been loud enough for everyone to hear and we may have all gone to jail and I think that is why I got the nod. This has made me feel ashamed that this type of thing goes on un noticed and unattentive everyday. We have to wake up and pay attention to the injustices. We just have to. and that is the rest of the story ! God Bless YOU ALL !
T A K E I T B A C K !

90 days to stop disaster in Africa
Mail & Guardian online 6/5/04

A huge operation to tackle the world's worst unfolding humanitarian crisis will swing into action today following a warning that up to 300 000 people in Sudan could die within months even if essential aid gets through.

The United Nations will launch a 90-day emergency programme after securing promises of funds from the US and other countries at a conference in Geneva.

The UN on Friday described a developing catastrophe in the region of Darfur and said the relief effort was crucial "to avoid massive death and starvation".

International aid agencies blame the scale of the crisis on the neglect of the international community and the obstruction by the Sudanese government of aid efforts.

<snip>

Andrew Natsios, head of USaid, a government agency, told the conference, which was held in private: "If we get relief in, we could lose a third of a million. If we do not, it could be a million."

<snip>

Jan Egeland, the UN under-secretary general for humanitarian affairs, admitted the response to the crisis had been too slow and a further $96-million was needed for the remainder of this year.

"This is no wish list. This is exactly what it would take to avoid massive death and starvation," he said in an interview on Friday. "If we don't get it all, so many people will perish. It is as dramatic as that."

I've been hearing this on BBC and many, many international news outlets.

If 350,000 people in England were about to die from starvation it would be all over every news broadcast. If 1 million Austrailians (not to Aborigonies) were in danger it would be a world wide crisis. And if thousands (much less hundreds of thousands or millions) of Americans were in danger, we would be looking at 24/7 CNN coverage and emergency sessions of Congress.

But if it is Sudan the reaction is "too slow" to save 350,000 people. They have already been written off. The town I live in is about 45,000 people. It would take 6 or 7 of the local suburbs to make up 350,000 people. Think about how many peiple in your area it would take to make up 350,000. All dead. Even if the aid comes through.

How dare the US spend Billions (with a capital B) on "reconstruction" in Iraq and not come up with the $96 million to save hundreds of thousands of people. Fuck who gave what. If the US can declare war unilaterally (or damn near) then why can't we provide relief (damn near) unilaterally? Our defense budget now over $400,000 billion. Less than 1/400,000th of the defense budget would keep HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE FROM DYING OF STARVATION! Not to give them oil wells and pipelines. Not to give them a Democratic government. Not to improve their way of life.

To give them life. Just to let them live.

I am proud of vetwife. Thank you so much for doing what you did. Change, like politics, is all local.

Just don't loose sight of the big picture.
