Anyone here old enough to remember how some cheered Kennedy's
assassination? I do. Some of the most vile comments came from Texas and Illinois, the Carolinas and Gerogia...the newspapers even printed some of those comments. Same is true for the assassination of RFK and MLK. I believe the RW forgets how ugly they have been. May Ronnie rest in peace but life goes on. I am more concerned about the young men and women in Iraq who have not had a chance to live their lives to the fullest.

2. Yep, in fact I posted to another thread about exactly that...
From Texas, but you probably guessed that already. The majority of the kids in my 5th grade class cheered and applauded when Kennedy was assassinated. I was horrified, and have never forgotten it.

20. I am convinced that they are simply not willing to think about..
many things. There are many good, thinking people in Texas, but their voices are generally drowned out by the idiots, of whom there are many. In my elementary school, the theme was 'that yankee bastard', now that he's gone, we'll get a real Texan President! We should all be so proud (NOT!).

4. In an earlier thread
I mentioned that Rolling Stone (I think) once printed a "where were you?" -type article about the JFK assassination. One guy's account told how he was in Louisiana at the time and people were really happy about it and saying things like "it's about time someone nailed that Catholic bastard".

7. we cannot allow them to canonize the myth
of Reagan as a wonderful president.

It is vital that people remember everything that actually happened during his rule, that they not swallow the happy face version that the right wingers are shoving down our throats.

That was as huge mistake! But then, he was only killing Iraqis so the Republicans praised our support. Hold that picture of Rummy up high!

14. Agreed.
I will not stoop to the level of the freepers and bash the man during his family's time of grief, but we MUST stay dedicated to the truth. And in his case, the truth was very sad.

31. And don't forget how the "Reagan tax cuts" really hurt middle and lower
class. Almost all of your deductions were taken away (gasoline, sales tax, credit card interest) and you medical deduction threshhold was raised to a level where few can claim any deductions unless you have had a catastrophic illness. That's what I remember about the 8 years of RR. Do you think the media will report 'fair and balanced?' NOT!!!

that there were plenty of idiots running around in 1963 saying things like that makes me proud to affiliated with a bunch of idiots in DU that aren't behaving any better today.

It makes me proud to be a human when I think about how far we have come...

10. Oh, yes. But I remember how shell-shocked we felt

in my Tennessee high school. We got the news during fifth period and our 6th period teacher just had us put our heads down at the start of class. Later, we talked quietly, just about what had happened in Dallas.

"The evil that men do lives after them, whilst the good is oft interred with the bones. So let it be with . . Reagan."

Said it was the best thing to happen to this country. I won't celebrate Ronnie's passing. But I also won't look down on those here who choose to be less than cordial to the gipper.

15. Yes and it was much worse that anything on here. I remember
hearing many people laughing and saying how great it was that the Nword lover was dead and now we would have a Texan in his place. I also remember the literal cheering at my high school when MLK was killed in Memphis, I lived in rural Arkansas at the time and it was a fun time for many there.

16. Kennedy's life was cut short by a bullet
Reagan lived much longer than most, and he had every privilege in the latter part of his life. People rejoicing his death are (justifiably) angry at what he has done to this country. Much of what is wrong today is a direct result of his horrrible policies.

19. Exactly - I would have felt sad for Reagan had he died back in '81.
But not now. He had a full life, one characterized by some good things, but also a great many bad things. I wonder if our country will ever repair the damage Reagan did.

35. There was glee in 81
And I remember there was glee among some populations at the attempted assassination, and Hinckley was vilified for "missing:

But many wondered WTF was going on when Hinckley was committed to St. Elizabeth's...DC's mental hospital...we figured he was a privileged WASP kid...

The right wing always tries to demonize the left.

There's a freeper thread going tagging us as immoral and indecent for some comments made here about Reagan.

I've seen those people post stuff beyond vile.

Jesse Helms once publically threatened Bill Clinton and his wife. Dared them to show up in Carolina.

Yet the right wants to call us hateful and bitter.

Same with Reagan's death.

They have openly and viciously celebrated the death of beloved Democrats -- two words: Paul Wellstone.

23. I was in high school in Texas
and, much to my disgust, one student in my class actually cheered. He was chastised and shamed by the principal who had stepped into our classroom in our tiny school to give us the bad news.
Everyone else, as far as I knew, was deeply saddened and horrified by the response of that one none-to-bright a**hole.

I know it must seem like all Texans are hate-filled idiots, rednecks and a**holes. (We definitely have at least, our share.) But there are some Texans (I would like to think most Texans) who are compassionate, caring and have good sense.

I feel so apologetic for being Texan and resent Bush for his part in making me feel that way. We have enough of an image problem without his adding to it.

I was in gym class when the announcement came over the intercom. The principal asked for a moment of silence but instead of silence I heard this from a girl whose father was chairman of the local Republican Party: "Good! Now if someone would just kill Justice Warren!"

34. I remember quite clearly that about 1/3 of my 7th grade class...
...in St. Petersburg, FL, began cheering wildly when the news became public. I was shocked by the assassination, and shocked again by their ugly reaction.

That's the day when I became politically motivated.
