A ? for you DU oldtimers (15,000 posts plus) - Is this like deja vu ?
Remember a couple of years ago when there was the struggle between the "moderates" and the "lefties"....and many lefties exited? From reading some of the posts the last couple of days, do you sense we are about to repeat history here on DU? Anyone remember that ? :)

1. Well.....
I am only edging up towards 11,000 posts. But, yes, I remember when many lefties exited.

Ah yes, I remember it well.....

But, I just grow my ignore list. You're stuck with me.

7. I don't use my ignore list.
Maybe I should. There are quite a few dill-hole Kerry supporters that would look good in it.

5. It seems to go in cycles, don't it?
Until Skinner has to step in and set some ground rules. We don't want that, do we? :) RESPECT each other's opinions.

3. Of course, some old-timers have less than 500 posts....
So that is not the measuring stick by any means, but if you do have 24,000 posts, we can assume you have been here a while and have seen a lot of changes...

6. I'm an oldtimer edging to 7000 posts
Edited on Sun Jun-06-04 05:07 PM by Nlighten1
and YES I was thinking this same exact thing. The "moderates" here are giving this lefty fits and it did remind me of the time when a lot of the lefties took off.

After getting into a few flame wars with the moderates I see why the lefties moved on.

8. 4,000 here,
but have been here since the beginning, and never
before have I seen DU this fractious. It wouldn't
surprise me to see a repeat of a mass "move on."

10. Always sad when it comes to that
seems that for a long time there could come to pass (over time) a sort of familiarity - even a jocularity between frequent sparring partners. ... Think that becomes less and less possible when the community has grown to this size.

11. Yes, I remember the days of the mass exoduses....
There was the Green exodus...

And the DU old-timers disturbed by the new rules exodus...

Frankly, I miss those folks -- I feel they brought a lot to the table and were constantly challenging my world view, something I (unlike others) have no fear of. I would even say I learned a great deal from them.

And I never saw one of them tell the DU community "Shut up, you're embarrassing us". ;)

12. I guess I haven't been paying attention
but I do remember. I've lost a lot of good friends as a result of these purges.

13. Bah. The Dem Primaries was as bad as it ever got around here.
Edited on Sun Jun-06-04 05:18 PM by VolcanoJen
I've only got 10K posts, but I've been around since "the beginning."

(A simple way to figure out how long a poster has been around... just roll your cursor over the profile icon and, looking at your "status bar," note that number at the end of the line. Good indicator of a poster's DU "Age", and a better indicator than a post count, in my opinion.)

Anyhoo, I remember the "exodus," and what precipitated it, but I still think that the Dem Primaries represented the nastiest we ever behaved toward each other. I had to walk away, for days at a time when it got really hot... but I stuck it out, and I plan on hanging around. :D I was a Mod during part of that time, too, so maybe my perspective is a little different. I have to say that during that time, many of us thought about just out-and-out giving up on these boards. :-(

14. I'm locking this thread.
There has always been tension between various viewpoints on DU, and there always will be.

People come, people go. Centrists and leftists come and go. The last few days are no different from any others, except for the fact that Ronald Reagan has died, and people are reacting to that.

This too will pass. We made it through the presidential primaries. Compared to that, this is nothing.

15. i have less than 15,000 posts
but i've been here three yrs, i think i qualify as an oldtimer.

i know of which specific time in DU history you speak,
and no, i don't think the big Exodus is about to happen.

if it does occur, it'll be the moderates departing this time, imo.
