Bush laid his hand on the OFFICIAL PROCLAMATION of Reagan's death:
Announcing the Death of Ronald Reagan by the President of the United States of America a Proclamation

TO THE PEOPLE OF THE UNITED STATES:

It is my sad duty to announce officially the death of Ronald Reagan, the fortieth President of the United States, on June 5, 2004.

We are blessed to live in a Nation, and a world, that have been shaped by the will, the leadership, and the vision of Ronald Reagan.

With an unshakable faith in the values of our country and the character of our people, Ronald Reagan renewed America's confidence and restored our Nation. His optimism, strength, and humility epitomized the American spirit. He always told us that for America the best was yet to come.

Ronald Reagan believed that God takes the side of justice and that America has a special calling to oppose tyranny and defend freedom. Through his courage and determination, he enhanced America's security and advanced the spread of peace, liberty, and democracy to millions of people who had lived in darkness and oppression. As America's President, Ronald Reagan helped change the world.

President Reagan has left us, but he has left us stronger and better. We take comfort in the knowledge that he has left us for a better place, the shining city that awaits him.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, GEORGE W. BUSH, President of the United States of America, by the authority vested in me by the Constitution and laws of the United States, in honor and tribute to the memory of Ronald Reagan, and as an expression of public sorrow, do hereby direct that the flag of the United States be displayed at half-staff at the White House and on all buildings, grounds, and Naval vessels of the United States for a period of 30 days from the day of his death. I also direct that for the same length of time, the representatives of the United States in foreign countries shall make similar arrangements for the display of the flag at half-staff over their Embassies, Legations, and other facilities abroad, including all military facilities and stations.

I hereby order that suitable honors be rendered by units of the Armed Forces under orders of the Secretary of Defense.

I do further appoint Friday, June 11, 2004, as a National Day of Mourning throughout the United States. I call on the American people to assemble on that day in their respective places of worship, there to pay homage to the memory of President Reagan. I invite the people of the world who share our grief to join us in this solemn observance.

IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this sixth day of June, in the year of our Lord two thousand four, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and twenty-eighth.

GEORGE W. BUSH

1. I won't be mourning at all on June 11.

I won't begrudge those who do, however. My school better not fly the flag at half-staff for that moron either.

The flag thing is customary. I remember it being done when Nixon died. I believe it was done for 30 days as well.

Funny thing is, I was out earlier and passed a few flags flying at businesses. None were at half-staff. Not even the one at Home Depot (RW business).

3. THIRTY DAYS!
THIRTY FUCKING DAYS!

They had the flags at half-mast for less than a week after 9/11!

What a joke.

7. Flags around here were at half-mast for a LONG time after 911
Of course, every fire department, which means every locality, seemed to have lost someone, so it wasn't in the abstract.

17. Didn't Bush declare the mourning period over after 2 weeks -when 3000 died
in the WTC?
I'll try to find a link.

20. Bush had only 11 days of mourning after 9/11 then went on vacation
Spokesman Ari Fleischer said the president would chair his National Security Council meeting Saturday morning via teleconference from Camp David. On Sunday, when U.S. flags are returned to full staff for the first time since the attacks, Bush plans to join Marines at the presidential RETREAT.

28. No prob. Thanks to you for the question!
It shows where the priorities lie. I also have seen no national day of mourning for our troops. In fact, when their names were read on Nightline the right wing boycotted that Memorial too.

37. Normal Protocol, not everything is a conspiracy...
In the event of the death a present or former official of the government of any State, territory, or possession of the United States, the Governor of that state, territory, or possession may proclaim that the National flag shall be flown at half staff." The code also includes other related details including the specific length of time during which the flag should be displayed at half staff, in the event of the death of a "principal figure"(e.g., 30 days for the death of a sitting or former President, 10 days for the death of a sitting Vice President, etc.).

8. I'm wondering too
Clinton gave me a day off, so I could drink beer and scratch while they planted Nixon. A paid job break to honor Ronnie would suit me fine.

I think it would be fitting that the government cease to help people for a day in honor of Reagan.

to find religion. That would allow us to properly demonstrate our overwhelming sorrow for Reagan's death and our desire to support our President....

15. June 11
That's strange because June 11 has been worrying me for a while. It just seemed to me that with 9/11 and 3/11 (Madrid), that 6/11 was a day to watch with some trepidation. And now this..........

The other odd thing to me has been that, had Reagan lived one more day, he would have died on 6/6/2004 (2+4=6) or 666 which, of course, to the Armaggedonists, is the sign of the antichrist. This association had already bedeviled Ronald Wilson Reagan (666). How very odd that he should almost die on 6/6/6. Of course his death will always be associated with the 6/6 anniversary of D-Day.

Another sign to me that the gods are trying, in every way possible, to give us some strong clues about what they think about how the world is going.

He will be 11 years old and we'll be having a party. The TV will be turned off all day. Incidentally, June 11th was the day Tim McVeigh was executed, three years ago I believe.
