Poll question: Could there possibly be more navel-gazing at DU?

Since Raygun died there seems to be an awful lot of soul-searching going on at this Liberal, I repeat LIBERAL message board by more than a few individuals.

I must admit some of the comments that have been made by some folks have been pretty crass. But, the Death of a "Shiny Hill America" Salesman seems to have caused an overload of emotional reactions (in all their many forms) and then some "eat your own" activities and now some contrition.

I hope it's all out of our system now.

1. The difference between the right and the left

The right believes itself to have the truth (being it the religious right or the free trade true believers). They see their task as being one of making the truth fit their agenda. To this end they will twist and corrupt the truth in order to get it to fit their view.

The left relies on the truth to guide their path. They form their world view from what can be discerned as true. To this extent they will often stop to examine where they are and where they are headed. This navel checking is a reality check. It slows our pace but is necissary to who we are. The zealots will always be able to race ahead. But the cautious pace used by the left can see the cliffs before they race off them.

However, I don't think the left is racing off any cliffs here because our resident Jester, MoPaul (love you baby!) made a rip-roaring piss-on-Raygun's-grave rant!

Now if John Kerry came out and made that rant, I'd be more than a little unnerved.

How should we take this less seriously? Tell more jokes? Not react to other posts (although that would kind of defeat the purpose of a "discussion" board)?

I guess I just don't understand what individuals need to do to take this less seriously.

On the other hand, I do know that all of the right wing talk show hosts are going to be reading from this board today.

7. Now see, I have a problem with what you just said.

I don't care if Rush reads MoPaul's rant and comments on it. It's his sinister way of painting all liberals as monstrous commie God-haters. Maybe you should fax him some of the "positive" threads about President Reagan here. I saw quite a few. If Rush really wants to be Fair and Balanced, why wouldn't he read both types of posts from DU?

I know, he won't because he is a fascist propagandizer. But there's not much I can do about that. And asking for more censorship is not the answer either, but in fact would be exactly what people like him are looking for.

However MANY MANY DU posters have been calling for that since Saturday.

But, you implied it is a bad thing to have "non-serious" posts about his death because "you know it will be on talk radio Monday."

4. Ok, I'll start.

I think people need to chill. But then again, that's just my opinion about another person's opinion! I'm not really overly concerned what some Republican or Conservative or Christian or whatever thinks if they read this site. If they can't figure out DU is similar to life in that some people make loopy, wacky, over-the-top "release" rants and others make heart-felt sympathy threads, yet DU differs from real life in that...it's an anonymous board!!, well they is dumb.

But in the end who cares what they say in response to DU, even if they are Andrew Sullivan?
