How do you think the media will react to Jimmy Carter's death?
Will they give him the type of non-stop coverage that Ronnie is getting? Will they label him a "failed one-term president" rather than the man ahead of his time he often was? Will his post-presidency where he has worked non-stop for peace and helped others especially in developing nations be contrasted with the other former presidents who have spent there time golfing and sitting on corporate boards? collecting fat fees from speaking gigs.

Long Live, James Earl Carter. I'll bet you see more emotion from the people and from other nations when his time comes than you will from the media.

1. While I hope to see the one sided maudalin coverage
for Carter that Reagan is getting, I think Carter would be utterly appalled at it. I bet his funeral will be short and sweet by his choice.

2. I believe they will focus on the Iran hostage crisis
After all, that is the main reason he lost the election. They can't possibly focus in on the peace treaty he helped forge between Israel and Egypt or the Nobel Prize or his massive work to make the world a better place to live for ALL its people. No no, the Iranians took some Americans hostage and the rescue effort failed so the media will have to bring that up again and again. Especially Faux.

4. Carter has been so active as an ex President
I imagine it will go like this

"While JEC was a single term president, his Nobel Prize and constant work for Habitates for Humanites and Clean Elections world wide blah blah blah"

5. I think Carter will do ok
In part because of his tireless efforts since leaving the presidency to help people and to bring peace.

I don't hope we find out too soon though.

6. We dont have to look to the future
to see how the repugs will respond
just think back to the death of Paul Wellstone and his family.

Anyone who gets dissed about bashing Reagan, just think of what they did to Paul.

7. You'll Be Surprised
Remember, Raygun's death has been planned for for over a decade. Hours of video was just sitting around ready to go. Plus, these newsrooms got a long "BOLO" or warning this was about to happen...thus went into full "Raygun" mode. Also, this happening on a weekend made it even easier, since the cable networks have nothing but filler programming and it was easy to dump the Tom Hanks bio for the Raygun one.

I look at Raygun's passing like that of the Pope or other major figure whose venerated by a loyal following. Much of this "mourning" is more a test of their own faith than anything this person stood for or ever did. Raygun long faded as an activist for "Conservative" causes and became a term applied to any and every wingnut to establish their credentials. It's kinda like those who venerate RFK (which I do) or even a Howard Dean...based on an image of what the person stood for as opposed to what the individual really did or is doing.

It's traditional to glorify a person in death...then to revisit that later. I remember a lot of nostalgia and a similar treatment when Nixon left the planet...despite him still being disgraced. Say what you will about his politics, Raygun should be saluted for being a self-made man and some of the tributes this weekend were more dedicated to that part of his life than his politics or any political agenda.

We haven't had a major political figure die since Nixon, and the last state funeral was Lyndon Johnson in 1973 (and honestly I don't remember it). This will be the first state funeral with "wall-to-wall" coverage and, again, something the networks have planned for for years. A lot of what we're seeing are long-drawn plans in action.

I expect a very, very positive tribute when President Carter time comes...based on many of the same things they're doing with Raygun now. Of course they have lots of background material, but Carter's story of rising from Plains will be the focal point when that time comes as much as Raygun's radio/film/early political days are. The fact Carter has won the Nobel Prize and gained international fame...especially in his years since his Presidency, will lead to a huge International show of sympathy and support...something we're not seeing now with Raygun. But hopefully, Mr. Carter's robust and still contributing, he's got a long time of sharing his gifts and wisdom with us. The same goes for President Clinton!

11. Look At The Peacemakers!
Carter brought home Camp David and Clinton brought about the treaty with Jordan and almost (had Sharon, Perle, Wolfowitz and others not destroyed the process) had the Palestinians aboard as well.

Now how many Peace treaties can we credit to Raygun or either Bush? The legacies don't compare.

Cheers!

15. I beg to differ...
...Carter will be raked over the coals as will Clinton.

But, then again, you assume the press and free speech in this country will not have degenerated further by that point. With Carter, there's a chance we may still be somewhat close to what limited freedoms we now enjoy, but Clinton...

By the time Clinton becomes a septuagenarian, we may be living under martial law.

10. Carter
Edited on Mon Jun-07-04 09:17 AM by Scottie72
Jimmy Carter was a very underated Presidient. He is the best ex-president this nation has ever had.

I almost flipped out when I heard of what a great ex-president Ronnie was... I was like WHAT? u have to be kidding. I cannot name one good thing he has done.

Long live Jimmy Carter! May his humanitarian work continue for generations to come!

On edit: fixed grammar.

12. I think they will focus on his time after the WH.....
which I also have to argue has eclipsed his Presidency in terms of the sheer effectiveness and difference he has made worldwide...I'm proud of Carter, but the "Right" was determined to undermine his Presidency. and they did. Free from those constraints, Carters incredible abilities and contributions have florished.
