I must post the obvious.

The folks to the right who support rebuilding the United States to become a Christian State while simoultaneously speaking of freedom of religion are hypocrites.

People on DU who are even decently read on history must realize that this must not become a theocracy. The story of history dictates that a theocracy is mutually exclusive to a democracy.

Furthermore the people who propose this idea do not follow the teachings of peace, love, 'love thy enemy' and 'thou shall not kill' that Christ talks about. In the same vein that many of these people call Islam a violent religion, history shows many more examples of Christian violence with aims towards complete conversion.

DO NOT TOLERATE THIS MOVEMENT. WE MUST NEVER BE A THEOCRACY.

But if you look around, the Churchs of this country control waaaay to much political power. They take money from the masses and feed them lies. I noticed this as I was driving today, the Churches now have cell phone towers as a form of revenue. Corporations can get a cheap location, and the churches get a revenue source. All tax free, just makes me sick!!!! It's not a place of religion rather one of commerce...

I used to think that it was common sense for everyone to support Democracy. The more I see and the more I read... I realize my stance at that point was largely naive.

And I recognize your points on Churchs and money. When I was going through my years of Catholic Sunday school I could not help but think of the example of Jesus kicking the money changers out every time they passed the collection plate.

Tell me the difference in me opening up a hot dog stand on church property and sell hot dogs? Why not open a Starbucks? Essentialy that is what they are doing, isn't it?

8. I totally agree, and I've been reading about this threat for years...

However, until now people have thought I was just a paranoid Chicken Little but I think others are awakening to it.

Those who want a theocracy are either normal people who have been intimidated, fooled and/or brainwashed with some horribly twisted theological teachings, or else they have some dire mental health issues, one of which is a serious need to be controlling. It is really scary. We're talking about people who deliberately go out of their way NOT to be kind, loving or empathetic. They seem to be absolutely ignorant of the importance of Grace, absolutely cannot just "live and let live." It's sick, and unfortunately, there are RW political people within what's left of the mainline churches who are preparing for a coup a la the Southern Baptist takeover. I'm not kidding, and this power and control grab is totally unchristlike in spirit and action.

Is nothing sacred to these people?

Bill Allows Mixing of Religion, Politics


WASHINGTON - Churches that mistakenly mix religious and political activity would face reduced fines but keep their tax exempt status under a provision in a corporate tax bill the House is to consider this week.

The proposal, which could invalidate the strict separation of religion and politics in current tax laws, was introduced by House Republicans the same week President Bush (news - web sites)'s re-election campaign targeted 1,600 Pennsylvania congregations to recruit voters.

Critics fear it would give politicians a pass to flout the rules without putting religious organizations at risk.

The mammoth bill, the American Jobs Creation Act of 2004, would impose reduced fines against churches and other places of worship that inadvertently allow political activity on their properties more than twice a year. On the third violation, the religious organizations would lose their tax exemption for one year.
