A question for any government employees

I'm currently researching jobs and most that I find are for the government or government contractors. One common theme seems to be a background security check. My question is, what does this background check consist of? I've never been convicted of any crime and I pay my taxes. However, I have written several letters to the editor about Shrub and have openly protested the war. Is this something that they would look for? I am in no way against the government (I'm a Democrat afterall) but I disagree with the current administration. Could this affect me? Also, how does one become part of a "no fly" list? Were the people on this list arrested at a protest or is it just derived from some other source (letters to the editor, internet postings, etc...)?

Also, does anyone know how I can figure out what GS level I am? I worked for Census 2000 as an enumerator, took a test, and got some kind of clearance but I don't remember what that was.

1. My two cents.

The security check consists of looking at criminal records, and then asking about you with former and current supervisors, neighbors, landlords, friends, etc. Of all my hippie friends, I've never seen anyone run into trouble with the checks.

The GS level in your case would probably be based on your qualifications and the job opening. It's basically the salary range for your job, with the precise salary based on the step (based on experience) and of course any additional bonuses. I don't think being an enumerator would make any dfference with that.

2. There are different checks for different levels of clearance.

Most clearances are for "secret", and the background check for secret is as described by rsammel. If you get one of the jobs requiring "top secret", the check is much more complete (and filling out the application is a pain in the ass).

I doubt very much that LTTEs would hurt, unless what you said was really over the top. However, having your name on the masthead of a high-profile anti-war group might be a problem.

Getting a Secret clearance is relatively straightforward.

I just realized that my knowledge and experience with clearances is all pre-Ashcroft and Pre-"Patriot" Act, so things may be different.

3. Would these be considered "secret" or "top secret"?
