10 of 12 US carriers are now at sea
Edited on Wed Jun-09-04 08:47 AM by Minstrel Boy
USS Carl Vinson:
New Skipper Takes 'Gold Eagle' to Sea -- The 'Gold Eagle' departed its homeport of Bremerton, Wash., for the waters off the coast of Southern California June 1, where she will reunite with Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 9 for carrier operations and training.
http://www.cvn70.navy.mil/

USS Lincoln:
Lincoln return delayed (May 28) -- The USS Abraham Lincoln will not return to Everett this month as planned, the Navy said Thursday.

The aircraft carrier was expected to return to its home port following 11 months of maintenance work at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in Bremerton.

The Lincoln now will go straight to sea for training when it leaves the shipyard next week
http://www.heraldnet.com/stories/04/05/28/loc_lincoln001.cfm

USS Roosevelt:
Off the coast of France to "bolster a flotilla of a dozen or so warships" for D-Day security.
http://www.centredaily.com/mld/centredaily/news/8800488.htm

And seven more carrier battle groups:
Stennis, Ronald Reagan, George Washington, Kitty Hawk, Harry S. Truman, John F. Kennedy and Enterprise, and several dozen escort ships, stage "massive exercise" in Pacific.
http://www.signonsandiego.com/news/metro/20040604-9999-1m4pulse.html

The only carriers still in port are the Nimitz and the Eisenhower, which is out of commission while it's engine is refurbished.

Not only is the scope of this beyond unprecedented, but it was unscheduled - the Navy belatedly cancelled the family members' "Tiger Cruise," because the ships were needed for the "exercise."

Also worth noting: Concurrent with the massive deployment to the Western Pacific, the Russians are staging an "unprecedented" deployment to their Pacific coast:

MOSCOW, June 9 (Itar-Tass) - The airlifting of permanent-alert units from the European part of Russia to the Russian Far East began on Wednesday within the framework of the operational strategic military exercise, codenamed Mobility-2004.

...

According to his information, it is the first time such a big redeployment of the mobile reserve and the permanent-alert units from the East to the West of the country is done in the Russian Armed Forces. “Some 800 infantrymen, paratroopers and marines, together with 100 tanks, armoured vehicles and automobiles, will be airlifted from June 9 to June 18 at a distance of several thousand kilometres.

It should be added in this connection that the redeployed units would train for several days combat operations on the unfamiliar terrain in the Far Eastern strategic area. “The Mobility-2004 military exercise is without precedent in the Russian history by the size of the territory, on which it is held, and by the variety of armed services taking part in it,” the Defence Ministry representative said.

Recent threads have drawn attention to unusual levels of activity by the world's navies, as well as other indicators of an anticipated calamatous world event: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=104x1701699

13. You need only listen to Bush's warning
"This war is just like WW II." (remember how it ended)

He has said the use of nuclear weapons is assured the moment any weapon of mass destruction hits the US.

We even have new recommendations that smaller nukes with slightly less fallout is the way to go.

Illegal by International treaty we have franticly been building hundreds of mini nukes for 3 years. This was introduced to the American people as the bunker bunker bombs and confused by many as conventional 'daisy cutters' - cute name eh?.

Many mullahs and clerics have been taken aboard US naval ships in recent years and shown what they were told were nuclear weapons, in hopes that in might temper their Islamic jihad chant with a note of extreme caution.

Less than patriotic servants to the Bush cartel that are not "on board" for the nuclear mini war extravaganza are going home to spend more time with their families.

Of course in the time of a post nuclear war national emergency, elections will be temporarily suspended until the weather clears.

The final GO button for this "operation" (as if its life saving surgery) has not been pressed yet. The worse it looks for the neocons , the more likely it may proceed.

Then again maybe George is feeling extra paranoid and wants his G-8 summit surrounded by 100 US ships.

Anyway its a better CT than most.

7. Well if we are forever going to be at war with this style of fighting
we need a billion dollar army and navy. Like blowing up an ant hill with a bomb and hoping you do get them all. It is one crazy thing a war on terror. Terror is just a way of fighting and armies do not stop it.

8. Might not be all bad...
You could put the puzzle pieces together any way you want....but if you wonder: why we have mobilized militarily, why BA has been running negative ads against Kerry instead of positive ones for itself, why it seems Congress is letting so many things get swept under the rug, why we haven't heard from Powell in a long time, why Bush has consulted a lawyer, why Kerry is laying back, why McCain won't discuss a VP slot, why we've seen tons of McCain in recent months, etc.....

...perhaps this administration is bowing out soon. Deploying carriers and being ready for upheaval would make sense. Bush is doing badly in polls against Kerry, who has barely taken the gloves off, and there are still dozens of lurking problems out there. Perhaps they are cutting and running soon, in time to get another candidate in front of us.

9. Can we write to somebody in the Administration to ask WTF is
going on here? I am a little curious why we're burning up a couple million gallons of gas/diesel right now.

There better be a good reason to use up that fuel.

19. Yes, that's some serious tinfoil!
Unfortunately, tinfoil has been coming true occasionally, more often lately.

Bad news. Of course, SNOWBALL and BURRO could be any project, anything, or a spoof or hoax.

However, any "impact" on June 19th or 20th will be noticed.

15. this is overly sensationalized
For one thing, spring is the time the US Navy (and every other nation with a navy) does training. For another, it's common practice to have our navy observe the training exercises other nation's navies perform, and that requires sending our ships off to see. For another, these various carrier groups are being sent to different areas on the globe, so it's unlikely that they are being sent out to invade or attack anyone.

IMO, the most likely explanation is that we are sending out ships out to send the message that other nations should not think that because our Army is tied up in Iraq, they should feel free to act against our interests. One of the carrier groups is being sent to West Africa, to scare some of them into "behaving". Another is being sent to the Western Pacific, and I'd guess it's to send a message to China about Taiwan, where the Chinese have been using violence against pro-democracy/independence activists

As I mentioned, the navy abruptly cancelled a family members' cruise, so this isn't proceeding according to a long-held schedule.

The scale was unprecedented last week, when we thought it was only seven. Now it's ten.

20. The navy "abruptly" cancels a lot of things
Military exigencies trump everything else. Doesn't need to be a war or a threat of invasion. If one ship that's scheduled for a particular exercise has engine trouble, another goes in its place.

Ships are supposed to be at sea, not sitting in port. That was one of the lessons actually learned from Pearl Harbor.

21. I agree
This is important info, and no matter what it ultimately means, IMO it's important. As I indicated in my previous point, the message of this deployment is important stuff. If the lack of attention is any indication, there seems to be little awareness of what's going on in Hong Kong, Taiwan, W Africa, and even Saudi Arabia because we're too focused on other issues (ie mainly Iraq) .
