I'm impressed by the funeral/ceremony
Edited on Wed Jun-09-04 06:21 PM by sgr2
All former Presidents should be buried this way. Though I'm no fan of Reagan, it is fitting for him to receive this kind of tribute. I disagree with those who choose to demonize the whole thing, but it's just a difference in opinion.

24. No. This is not American.
This is becoming increasingly inappropriate.
This is much more like an old Soviet Union style funeral.
This is the kind of funeral the Communists had for for Stalin and Brezhenev.

You know they buried President Kennedy in three days. He was a sitting president - his unexpected death DID mean immediate change for everyone living in this country. Reagan has been out of office for SIXTEEN YEARS!

The accolades and unrebutted praise for this MAN is not in the tradition of a democracy that believes that all human beings are created equal. Reagan was not better than you or me. In fact, he was probably worse considering how many thousands of innocent people he allowed or ordered killed in Central America, East Timor, and the Middle East.

So this is NOT nice.
Indeed, this funeral extravaganza is positively un-American.
And it is getting just plain creepy.

More proof that there is something seriously wrong with the soul of this nation.

27. Sigh
> This is much more like an old Soviet Union style funeral.

Were their funerals as slow as this monstrosity? Could those damn guys in their fancy uniforms move any slower? It's just a hunk of rotting meat in a box. It's taking them a ridiculously long time to get the thing over with. I've already stated for my funeral to have a 10 minute graveside service. That is appropriate. This crap isn't.

48. Randi Rhodes said something today like...
..."they should just BURY him, unless they think he's coming BACK"...

You're right..."it is getting just plain creepy"...and after you hear Dubya perform the last rights on Friday, you'll experience "creepy" in a whole new way.

how much is this costing. what about those hungry people that just want something to eat but half of our society says no, we cant afford to feed you. to me this has become gross.

it is like here in the panhandle of texas, we all stop a half hour and let a funeral procession by, but an ambulance comes thru and how dare they get in our way, stop for a crosswalk no way

He's not the King, and this ain't Britain.

The wonderful thing about this country is that after their time in office, they become regular citizens again.

A nice, solemn respectful funeral with dignitaries and the like, is all we should really seek for former presidents, imho.

The founding fathers would not be amused with this crap.

Absolutely true, and they would be dumbfounded and ticked that the USians are in so much hurry to find a substitute for royalty. If the average folks on the street didn't want this, it wouldn't be happening. We're complicit.

46. This is What I Was Thinking
I think an ex-President deserves a formal send-off, but we're getting dangerously close to King of England territory now. I mean, this IS America, we specifically do not have a monarch, and it's not like he got mowed down in office.

I am not a royal subject. I don't need a whole week to morn a man who did a job he was damn lucky to get. I owe them nothing, they owe us everything.

This is cult like and reminds me of what they do in dictatorships and in the old USSR. China probably has a more dignified method of send off than what we are looking at. This is like Chairman Moa's send off.

31. I think this is an insult to JFK
too many people don't remember or weren't around when JFK was killed in office. It was so very appropriate then to have this type of ceremony. There is something basically crazy about doing this for a 93 year old man (we all have to die sometime) and one who was not totally in his right mind when he was in the Oval Office. They should have had an abbreviated ceremony.

41. No he is not entitled.
No one is entitled to this kind of thing. He is entitled to be remebered for what he did which was horrible.

Funerals are for the living. After JFK I think we needed a serious intense moment of reflection and coming together. This is just an old guy who died a long time after he was our president. This is nothing more than a propaganda assualt with the intent to bolster a vission of a man and the country that is false.

38. My CBS affiliate made the comparison this morning.
I've been avoiding the news shows but tuned in to check on the weather. Their correspondent was standing in front of the Capitol.

Point by point, he compared the situation to JFK's death. Jackie vs. Nancy? John-John saluting vs. no children (apparently no grandchildren)? Finally, a standing president murdered in his prime vs. the end of a man whose body had already outlived his mind. The whole segment was far from Reagan-worship.

Auntie Liz died on a Tuesday and was buried on Friday. It was August and very hot and the air conditioner at the funeral home broke the day of the wake. The funeral director was getting concerned about the body (even with embalming). Mom's has been wondering if they'll need air fresheners at the Cathederal if they don't get him in the ground soon.
