Question about volunteer organizations

I've been thinking of taking on some volunteer work lately. This will be my first time volunteering, so I don't know much about it really. Which organizations are legitimate? Are local charities and volunteer groups less likely to be corrupt? Or should I stick with the bigger, more national ones?
