WTF? who has a link to the interview where babs bush dissed MLK ???
randi rhodes just mentioned that babs said we shouldn't put reagan on the $10 bill because then people will demand we put MLK on a bill. then, supposedly, poppy said "no, money is only for dead presidents".

did this exchange really occur? is there a link of a transcript?

if this is true it shows not only that babs is a racist but also that poppy is an idiot! ben franklin was never pres and he's on the $100!

please post links to this story if you have them. this needs to get out!

hey, i wish we'd take presidents off the money and put artists and great people on instead (though i think lincoln, jefferson, kennedy and fdr should stay on).

aside from MLK, i'd like to see duke ellington on a bill.

right here

<snip>

KING: There's a movement, Mitch McConnell of Kentuckian, a friend of yours, has started a movement to put President Reagan on the $10 bill, take Alexander Hamilton off and put him on.

What do you think?

G. BUSH: Well, I think it's probably going to take a little time to get that done, but I think it's -- you know, I'd be all for it. I'll vote on it.

KING: Would you be for it?

B. BUSH: Yes, I would, but then they're going to go through every president, maybe. I can't wait to see what George is going to be on.

KING: Well, I think there's a long wait. In fact, I think President Reagan signed the bill about before you can change it...

(CROSSTALK)

B. BUSH: Oh, (UNINTELLIGIBLE) can be changed.

KING: Yes, before it can be changed.

G. BUSH: I think it's going to take a while. Mitch is very able, though. Don't underestimate McConnell.

B. BUSH: It's very hard, but there'll be other American heroes who people want to put on bills. I guess I'm more -- less political and more practical than you. I mean, they're going to want to put Martin Luther King -- a lot of American heroes.

G. BUSH: Well, these are your presidents, though. They're not going to... B. BUSH: Well...

KING: Hamilton wasn't president.

G. BUSH: Is he on one?

That's the one you're talking about...

KING: It's the $10 bill.

B. BUSH: That a boy -- thank you very much.

KING: Secretary treasury, so Barbara's right.

B. BUSH: For what?

(CROSSTALK)

G. BUSH: Again.

B. BUSH: Well, I don't know. I think it would be wonderful, but I just suspect that everyone's going to come up with someone else.

40. Sounds like Babs caught herself making a racist remark
and then backpedaled, adding on something lame about "American heroes". I have little doubt about what was going through her mind when she said that. Like MLK would be first person she'd think of when she thought of "heroes."

25. Call me crazy, but....
I didn't see that as "racist". She referred to him as an "American Hero". Basically, the idea of changing who's on our money will open a can of worms. There will be lots of deserving "American Heros" (such as MLK) that should be considered as well.

Just my thoughts,

30. No, here's what I think is subtly racist: when she used the word THEY
Edited on Thu Jun-10-04 05:24 PM by demo@midlife
as in, "I mean, they're going to want to put Martin Luther King -- a lot of American heroes..."

So Mrs. Bush - as English teachers like to ask - just who is "they"? Just to give you the benefit of the doubt...surely by that you meant: "A great many people, and maybe even a few Republicans out there..."???

BTW, I can't believe GHWB didn't even know who's on the $30 bill! Gya!!

Edit to add comments.

33. Hmm - You could be right....
I'd like to have heard the way she said it, too - maybe that's the difference? Being the English student, I'd look at quote and say "they" referred back to "people". But again, that may have been what she was thinking....

"but there'll be other American heroes who people want to put on bills. I guess I'm more -- less political and more practical than you. I mean, they're going to want to put Martin Luther King -- a lot of American heroes."

Personally, I didn't think of it as a race deal - but more of an "I think I'm better than ALL the little people".

But I'm not saying I'm right - I've been wrong many times before. ;)

39. If the transcript is right
you are taking "they're going to" out of context

"It's very hard, but there'll be other American heroes who people want to put on bills. I guess I'm more -- less political and more practical than you. I mean, they're going to want to put Martin Luther King -- a lot of American heroes."

The they're going to want to put MLK is referring to - there'll be other American heroes who PEOPLE want to put on bills...the they're is referring to People - not racist I think and let me repeat I freaking hate this woman and can't believe I'd begin to give her the benefit of the doubt but I just don't see this as racist - from reading this transcript

38. You're right I don't think it was racist either
and I hate this woman - but she did say other American heroes and then mentioned MLK...the way Randi tells the story it sounds much worse than the way the transcript reads. Randi made it sound like Babs said oh no then the next thing you know they'll want to put MLK on something - and that is not what she said or how she said it...and Randi was talking about this again just a few minutes ago.

34. I saw this. There was nothing wrong w/what she said.
It was on the Larry King show.

She was saying that she didn't think RR should be put on the $10 bill, that Nancy didn't want it, and that it'd never get through Congress, anyway, because there are so many deserving people. There are those who want other Presidents, who would want to keep the current likelessness because they'd earned it, or MLK, or whoever. It was no slight to MLK.

Poppy Bush then corrected her as a soft aside, quickly, just stating, "Well, it's for former Presidents."

Larry King then pointed out that Alexander Hamilton, currently on the $10 bill, wasn't a former President. To which Babs responded, "Thank you, Larry" in a joking sort of way.

It was a very quick, soft, somewhat joking and lighthearted interlude. Nothing wrong with it. No slight to MLK or any racist intention.

37. Not racist.
Yall are just wanting to see a racist comment and so that's what you're seeing. I don't think that was a racist comment. I mean, you could probably (it's a bit of a leap though) that way, but she should be given the benefit of the doubt and here I don't even think it's that much of a question.

I will say that Poppy not knowing who's on the $10 is a bit disconcerting.
