"That ought to comfort you. We're a nation of law. We adhere to laws"
SAVANNAH, Ga. (Reuters) - Facing criticism for methods used to interrogate terrorism suspects held by the United States, President Bush (news - web sites) insisted on Thursday he had always ordered questioning methods to remain within the law.

"What I have authorized is that we stay within U.S. law," Bush told reporters in Savannah, Georgia, when asked what measures of interrogation he would authorize if the United States had a terror suspect in custody it knew was planning an attack.

"I'm going to say it one more time. In fact, maybe I can be more clear. The instructions went out to our people to adhere to law," said Bush, speaking at the end of a Group of Eight industrial nations summit.

"That ought to comfort you. We're a nation of law. We adhere to laws. We have laws on the books. You might look at those laws, and that might provide comfort for you. And those were the instructions from me to the government."

3. For someone who perports to be a Christian,
it would be nice if he acted like one and obeyed the commandments given to him by Jesus. Somehow "Love your neighbor as yourself" doesn't sound like it condones torture.

4. "What I have authorized is that we stay within U.S. law"
Looking just at that, US law derives it's authority from the US Constitution. I seem to remember reading something about "cruel or unusual punishments" somewhere in there...

Bush* likes to say this.

It's like Reagan saying "I don't remember."

12. "that ought to comfort you" WTF does THAT mean??
Edited on Thu Jun-10-04 06:09 PM by ElementaryPenguin
"You - the peasants of this nation/planet ought to be comforted to know that there are laws that might actually protect you from members of the ruthless ruling class - like yours truly - who happen to run this puny planet!"

Is that the jest of what this arrogant little fucking prick was voluntarily or involuntarily communicated to all of us "comforted", "who cares what you think" members of the peasant class - or am I beginning to read too many Freudian messages into everything this pathetically fragile, transparent numb-skull does??

14. That's Passive-Aggressive Behavior And His Substitute For...
being able to provide a substantive answer that demonstrates even the most BASIC understanding of the import of the situation and his role in the criminal activity.

You're correct... it's right up there with the "who-cares-what-you-think" mentality.

15. He got away with "There is America, and there is Texas" while in France...
...so he thought he'd try the same approach back home. He is sick of answering questions. He feels that he doesn't need to answer them. Remember the famous Woodward quote about how someone might have to explain themselves to him, but he's the president, and he doesn't owe an explanation to anybody.

Also, look at his quote in my sig line...he's on a mission from God and no damned peasants are gonna stand in his way.

He sits in the Oval Office fondling Saddam's gun...next step, build more presidential palaces to supplement the Crawford Pig Farm.

17. I heard that clip this morning. What an arrogant little shit
He spoke to that reporter in that condescending "I'm going to explain it one more time because you're soooooo stupid..." voice. You have to hear the clip to know how offensive it really was. Print cannot convey the nasty, smug, smarmy tone of voice used by this fuckwit.

I wanted to reach through the radio and slap him. Yes, I'm back to yelling at the radio. It's a good thing...other drivers give me lots of room.
