My wife got a call today from the Repub Natl Committee - catch this!
Here is the gist of the call:

Hi, I'm so and so calling from the Republican National Committee. We are conducting a little survey. As A GOOD CHRISTIAN AND REPUBLICAN...
to which my wife quickly interrupted, "I am neither Christian nor Republican so please remove my name from your damn list right now" and then hung up the phone.

Not that this comes as any great shock to DU'ers but can you believe the chutzpah of these people? It makes me sick to my stomach as to how they pander to people based upon religious beliefs.

Should've said
"I'm a Christian AND a Democrat"

That'll make heads spin.

4. I'd have stayed on the line and had some fun with them
"Oh, yes as a Christian and a Republican I will do everything I can to help re-elect President Bush. He represents me. The Democrat Party is the party of n**gers, Jews, queers, fags and welfare queens. President Bush puts all those people in their place."

That should floor them.

8. bluestateguy--no, that would inspire them and make them believe
that they are, indeed, doing a great job of getting out their (wink, wink message). What you mentioned in your post is EXACTLY who and what they are. To say such things to them would make them feel they had reached a kindred soul.

5. You've seen the stuff about *'s campaign approaching churches
to start "grassroots" groups?!!!

Christianity is a failure. The evidence?

They have failed in getting across the 6th commandment - Thou shalt not kill.

They have failed in following their supposed leader, Jesus Christ, who died rather than make war.

Because Christianity is a failure, it is not what it claims to be. It should, therefore, be TAXED!!!

10. The 6th Commandment is Thou Shall Not Commit Murder.

Please don't base your life choices on a crappy translation.

on edit: And the Ten Commandments ain't Christian, anyway. Go get your own damn commandments.

14. I agree but I don't.
Individual Christians have mucked everything up and besmirched something that is great and awesome in its purest form.

When I left the evangelical church I went to for 3 years, one of my complaints was that they exploited the death of one of the girls who died at Columbine. All because the pastor there wants to be at the center stage. These are the people that muck it up.

24. Religion is a business.
We're all supposed to believe that "the call" is about loving service with Jesus as its model.

Imagine having to decide what kind of career you should seek to get along on the world. How about something like this :

No hard physical labor.
You're looked up to by everyone.
Everyone wants to be your friend.
Job security forever.
You have psychological authority.
People invite you over, give you gifts etc.
You dress nice.
Everything you do is about how wonderful it is to be us.
Everyone thinks you're good.

Do you suppose these things have anything to do with why a bunch of people go into the ministry?

Yes, there are some who are the real thing, but they're out in the streets looking for Jesus and trying to "dress his wounds." The rest are business men.

29. Read Emmett Fox, The Beatitudes
Jesus didn't teach or believe in dogma, he believed in a personal connection with "God"

I'm not a Christian, but I strive to be Christlike

Peaceful
Tolerant of others
Generous
Hopeful
Loving
Kind
democratic with a small "d"
Abundance (I can have mine without taking yours, there is plenty for all of us)

6. do you folks live in a "swing" state?
I almost wish she had listened, it was probably a "push poll" and what they are pushing would have been interesting to hear.

12. That's exactly what I said to her
but she said she was so repulsed and incensed by it that she did not want to hear one word more. In a way I can't blame her. It got me pretty riled just hearing about it.

But I do agree with you that the phrase Good Christian is a code so that this probably was some kind of push poll.

27. I have a friend,
actually we were friends, who always describes herself and others in her circle as a good Christian people. Guess what? They are also republicans :puke:

Needless to say, I have distanced myself from her. She wonders why I no longer call and am somehow never available to do stuff as I used. I haven't yet summoned the courage to say what I really think about her kind of Christians and repukes in general. Call me a wimp.

11. well, naturally the god need a lot of help from the human beings
because he, apparently, cannot do it himself without their help.

They actually, are very important in seeing to it that the god needs their help and depends upon them to get the message across, even though he is supposed to be an "0mni" potent

Is that not a little presumptive on the part of these persons?

Just asking

A Republican who got a call from the party asking his opinions on *. He said, "I believe the man is a disgrace to our party." The caller agreed with him. Of course, that was in NoCal.

16. That is a little wierd
But who want's to be thought of as a "Bad Christian?" Right at the start it makes people feel defensive.

The best thing to do is not to play the game on those terms; as your wife did, move the game field somewhere else.

18. We've gotten several calls from them
One similar to the one your wife received. The last one we got they asked, "Would you regard President Bush's performance as favorable, unfavorable, or not really sure?" To which my husband replied:
"I think he is a liar, a false Christian who does not live as a Christian. I think he is guilty of bringing America into a war under false pretenses; that he is a war criminal; and that he should be impeached. Does this answer your question?" To which they replied, "Uh, yeah, uh, I think that will do."

21. We get them all the time here. . .
Edited on Thu Jun-10-04 07:20 PM by daligirrl
in conservative, wingnut northern Indiana. For a while they called asking specifically for my roommate (who is Filipino with an Hispanic last name). When I say he isn't home, they try to give me the spiel. . . my answer? "I'm sorry, the master isn't here. But can you get someone over here to get me out of these restraints?" They haven't called recently. My mom was visiting once when I did that. She was speechless.

30. The statement is an oxymoron
When you look at the actual teachings of Christ (like many of history's great spiritual guides), his teachings do not follow what the policies the Republican party implement. Unfortunately, it's becoming too powerful a force within many Christian churches and rapidly turning many people off.
