Nancy Reagan as victim??????
OK, I admit that I was an idiot for turning on Good Morning America this morning, but I did and heard the most amazing report.

Apparently, Nancy Reagan was unfairly picked on by everyone when she was first lady. Huh?

So, when the time comes (many, many years in the future) when Bill Clinton dies, are we going to get the news story about how Hillary and He were targeted unfairly for pretty much everything anyone could imagine they might have ever done?

Oh, I am so SICK of all the Reagan coverage.

I feel for the man's family, I even feel sorry for Nancy, because for all of her faults, it seems clear that she loved the man and will miss him, but puh-lease, no mention of the scandals that plagued his administration? No mention of the many, many indictments handed down to his appointees?

OK, I'm done now, I hear my children getting up, so I have to go. Time to turn on Sesame Street.

Bettie

1. I remember a picture of Nancy
on the front of a magazine - think it was Vanity Fair - looking adoringly - stepford-wifey up at Ronnie.

Welcome to DU!

2. NPR has covered the scandals.
Yesterday was particularly interesting.

9. Interesting, but pretty lackluster to me.
I heard NPR talk about his environmental legacy. I anticipated a great story, but nope. They basically said environmentalists hated his policies, but then interviewed analysts today who said see? Nothing has happened bad. He didn't destroy the Earth...they were EXTREMISTS in the environmental movement. Gee, I wonder which energy company those analysts worked for.

3. She was using an astrologer for Cris' sakes
If I hear one more question about how she is holding up. I will puke. She with all the other repukes planned this national day of mourning week.

4.  By accident or by thoughtful design...
you have framed a post which could incite many Democrats on this board to question your post. (Many here are suspicious of low numbered posts.)

Are you suggesting that the Clintons weren't unfairly targeted? If not, you might want to revisit your post... it could be misinterpreted.

7. Guess I shouldn't have posted. Sorry.
Thank you for taking the time to correct me.

Please allow me to clarify.

I was not trying to say that the Clintons were not unfairly targeted, I am a huge admirer of both of them.

My point was that the same people who have said that the RW Conspiracy didn't exist (which it so obviously did)are now speaking of Mrs. Reagan being a victim.

She took a few jabs here and there, as most first ladies do, but NONE of it rises to the level of persecution that the Clintons were subjected to.

My comparison was not meant to offend and I am sorry if it did so.

Respectfully,

Bettie.

18. My God, that's absolutely outrageous that someone actually lost his job
from posting here?? Are you or someone here free to give details? I've only been a regular here for a month or so but perhaps we should all be aware of what could happen. Was it because they posted on a computer at work, or what? Did that person post their story?

That is is so scary. The RWingers & rethugs are dividing us all and stripping away our democracy, and I put nothing past them.

6. Ah yes Queen Nancy with her
Edited on Fri Jun-11-04 07:40 AM by Dees
billion dollar china, designer dresses and perfectly coiffed hair. What can you say. She thought she was bringing class to the White House after those redneck Carter people trashed the entire building. The Carters probably buried a pig on the back lawn and such. What a pompous pimpette. A truly disgusting display of royal elitism.

edit..I love the Sinatra/Nancy rumors about having a little private time together right under Ronnie's nose in the White House.

12. If they picked on her maybe it's because of her horrid button-down
the back tops so reminiscent of straight-jackets.

She looked like a gargoyle on TV the other day: major tribute to the plastic surgery team that serviced her, but truly alien-like in appearance.

21. I don't think that's really fair
whatever I might thing of either of them, I think their relationship is one many people would like to aspire to. They were loyal friends and lovers. He was very good to her and she to him. Unfortunately they did not do as well in their relationships with their kids. But time has healed some of those rifts.
Any 50+ year marriage can be nothing but a great love story, no matter who the two people.
We can judge him for other reasons. Can't we leave their personal life alone?

15. How about a little Collusion w/ your coffee
This was all the more true since Nancy Reagan's
obsession was always her image, what the press was
saying about her and how she looked in the media.
Nancy appealed to her astrologer to secure her a better
press image. Since the controlled press could be
calibrated from day to day by the Bush networks, Nancy
Reagan found herself in the grip of a many-
levelled inside-outside operation whose true nature she was
too shallow to suspect.

19. I don't have the stomach for it either
I turned on the TV to get the weather forecast and there was Katie Couric saying that they would be reading excerpts of love letters written by RR to Nancy. What the hell is that if nothing but putrid PR?

I have always viewed Nancy as an extraordinarily needy person. The events of the last week have only confirmed my opinion.

20. Needy? Yeah, I see that.
I think that both Reagans were better actors than we ever thought, they seem to be (well, have been, in Ron's case) the kind of people who are always playing a role of some kind.

We all know at least one of these people in our own lives, the ones who don't like or know who they really are, so they pick up an assortment of "roles" to help them through life.

Right now Nancy's role is: Grieving Widow. I don't doubt that she grieves, but it seems that her husband was gone many years ago, what we see now is likely for show. Its not like his death was a big shock to anyone.
