UK: Labour (i.e., Tony Blair) suffers 'election kicking'

Tony Blair was dealt a severe blow by voters today as Labour plunged to third place in the local elections, the party's worst showing in living memory.
The situation has worsened for Labour after the Liberal Democrats took control of Newcastle City Council and ended 30 years of Labour rule.

The result will send tremors through the north east, the region which spawned the generation of New Labour, from Peter Mandelson to Alan Milburn, Stephen Byers, David Miliband and Tony Blair himself.

The Liberal Democrats overturned a deficit of 30 seat to take control of the council in what is their biggest prize in local government since capturing Liverpool five years ago.
