This is the third time that Nancy hugs the casket . . .
Edited on Fri Jun-11-04 09:21 AM by wndycty
. . .this was supposed to be a private moment. They breathlessly reporting that this is Nancy's last private moment with Ronnie . . .well I am willing to bet there will be at least 2 more TODAY! Any bets?

ON EDIT: I probably should have stated myself better. I am not troubled by Nancy. . .I am troubled by the breathless reporting. That was supposed to be a private moment but it was not. I am sorry because my initial remark came off as insensitive to Nancy

1. I don't see that it really matters, either way.
We all react differently in such situations. My Gran kept patting Da's shoulder, but I don't think that makes it terribly remarkable or newsworthy.

2. Well I am kind of tainted by the coverage. . .
. . .I in no way doubt Nancy's devotion. I should probably rephrase my statement because I don't have a problem with Nancy, I have problem with the breathless coverage of it.

6. Hi Padraig
how are ya? Miss seeing your posts. How is modishness treating you!

:)

I think Ronnie was her life ( as sad as that may be on a number of levels) and this is her expressing it.

12. I am good
my son is off school and I am on vacation and we are doing fun stuff. We saw Harry Potter ( it was great) and now are going to Ohio for a little road trip. I also saw Patti Smith the other night, for free.

We have been hanging out at a pool we belong to. I love summer!

:hi:

there's my little life report! :)

3. My uncle...
Wailed and tried to get his mother out of her casket.

We all handle grief in different ways. I think they should have just left her be alone with him.

I did not care for Reagan but I think it would have been decent to allow them some privacy.

20. My problem has always been with the coverage. . .
. . .I hated Reagan as a president, but I was compassionate for him as a human being. I think all the ceremonies are appropriate but the coverage is ruining it for me.

22. as was the initial - oh so long ago -
Private ceremony for the family.

Don't think I'd hold up well under such constant scrutiny. Afraid I might be tempted to go through the entire thing with my middle finger raised at the camera so they'd just give me some peace and privacy. But, then again, my life has never been a public life. So, who knows?

17. According to a Guardian article, it's all scripted
Reagan was the first president whose image was manipulated by handlers and his every appearance was scripted. Nancy along with Deaver) has had 10 years to plan this event.

Her compulsive attention to surface appearance was evident this week in the solemnities that marked Reagan's passing. Each moment was scripted. Her hand was present everywhere

(snip)

That same compulsive attention to appearance was evident this week in the coast-to-coast solemnities that marked Reagan's passing. Each moment was scripted, from the placement of his riding boots in the stirrups of the riderless black horse that accompanied his procession through Washington, to tonight's burial at sunset back in California.

Nancy's face was often hidden behind large brown spectacles but her hand was present everywhere, fluttering in a wave from the window of the limousine as it passed through the crowds lining the route, administering pats to the coffin as it arrived at the US Capitol. As the frail figure in black watched the spectacle unfold, it was hard to shake the impression that she was ticking things off on an imaginary checklist, and was immensely proud of how it was all turning out.

28. It was JFK's funeral all over again and he help
plan it before he sunk into the condition he has been in for the last few years. If she walks to The church it will be an exact copy. However Jackie did not have her picture all over TV patting the casket. JFK reposed in the White House for a day or so before he went to the Rotunda. She did go to the rotunda with the kids for brief moment.

19. I am soooo sick of the "love story" theme they keep trying to push.
I know MANY couples who loved or love each other the way "they did" and they do it WITHOUT excluding their own children!!!!!!

I love my husband every bit as much as Nancy loved hers. They are acting as if this relationship is unique and quite frankly, I don't think it is.

I have had enough of all this. TGIF. Can we get back to real news this weekend?

21. I understand what you're trying to say and I agree with you
wholeheartedly. I also have no problem with Nancy, it's quite obvious she loved him and today will probably be the worst day of her life.

I know what you mean about the "breathless" reporting. Before I turned off NBC I heard Tom Brokaw say that something like 108,000 people passed by Ronnie's casket. My only thought was, "Gee Tom, how many people passed by FDR, JFK, Eisenhower or LBJ's casket?"

I could be entirely wrong, but I think far more people showed their respects for those men at the Capitol Rotunda than did the past two days.

I can't be bothered watching anymore of the Reagasm. It's just too much...

at the casket. When my mother-in-law died, they oddly had 2 viewings (open casket). It wasn't even my own mother and I felt overwhelmed the second time, especially when a sister-in-law behaved very weird. She placed a stuffed squirrel in the casket beside her mom. Other than Mom enjoyed squirrels that ran around in her trees in her yard like most people, no one understood the signifance. I guess it made the daughter feel better.

Yes, Nancy has every right to greive however, whenever. But this media circus going on for a week seems cruel to her. I guess it doesn't matter how the family is affected, as long as the repugs get their Hero Worship/Smirk Association air time in the nauseating repetitiveness that makes for good brainwashing.

She's probably going to be a wreck by Saturday.

She and RR are the ones that planned this entire thing. There was an article that said there was a document over 300 pages long of the plans that they had filed.

30. Yep, hehe
There was an article about it on MSNBC I think that explained how the whole thing was done. They are supposed to file those plans within the first year of leaving the whitehouse. They started requesting that info asap because when JFK died they had no plans to go from.
