Hersh was talking to leakers - not just those involved in the official investigation - and may have gotten access (through off the record channels) to some of those that had not yet made their way to the Pentagon investigation.

The Congressional viewing of the pictures was relatively early in the scandal. It is all together possible that some of the worst of the worst had not yet been found/discovered/entered into the official investigation (and thus part of the viewing.)

Strategically speaking, you don't want to release them all at once because the public has an attention span similar to the length of the news segments they're fed every day.

The proven way to do this is to release them a little every day so that the public begins to retain the information. By Election Day, everyone will remember the information.

The corporate media sure has been doing some odd things lately to be "throwing down the lid". I think you're forgetting that a very large portion of the media is controlled by the CIA (do a search for Operation Mockingbird), and I'm also sensing that some of the major corporate backers are no longer convinced FratBoy is up to the job.
