This weekend is crucial for John Kerry.

The networks would love to spend another two days with the Reagan nostalgia. But two huge stories came out thiw week, and Kerry must sieze on them at once.

The first is the Ashcroft assertion of executive privilege (which is exactly what it is, as long as he refuses to turn the memos over to Congress) and the other is the revision of the terror report from the State Department. Outright dishonesty, which during any other week would be an important story. Maybe Rove saw Reagan's passing as an opportunity to retract the earlier report while nobody was looking. I don't know that to be true, but I put nothing past this group.

Someone (preferably Joe Biden or Dick Durbin) needs to go on TV tomorrow (or on one of the Sunday morning shows) to get these issues on the front burner. Otherwise we'll get more of Peggy Noonan and her ilk, and these two stories may as well just die. Which would be a real shame.

7. Roe v. Wade ruling same day LBJ died

The interesting thing about Roe v. Wade is that the decision was handed down the very same day that LBJ died. It wasn't planned, it just happened. As a result, the Roe v. Wade got second tier billing in newspapers across the country at the time. But look what has happened since.

8. Nah...wait and start on Monday.

Everything will still be all Ron Reagan and Ron Reagan connections. Then on Monday, the news will be back on track. Hopefully, everything's all locked and ready to go.

More and more, the news is reporting how negatives Bush's campaign has been and how early it went that way. I've criticized Kerry before for not getting out there about it and I get antzy to see the surrogates giving it the good fight. But so far, Kerry's been able to be above it all...and it looks like a successful strategy. :)

9. I don't think Kerry will get specific or personal until the debates . . .

. . . or until the final days of the campaign.

Right now, he needs to try to stay positive about himself, rather than negative about his opposition.

However, I AGREE WITH YOU that Kerry should seize the issues, get personal and assertive with conviction as election day approaches.
