Two truly deranged people found a place to express their moranic (sic) opinions in our version of the "New Times" weekly here in San Luis Obispo. I'm sure from the context, you clever DUers can guess the gist of their letters...here's my response. Hope you like it.
I must respond to the two writers from Lompoc in this section of last weeks issue: One writer quotes verbatim, right-wing talking head, Sean Hannity; Characterizing the torture at Abu Ghraib as "frat boy hazing" Wow, that took a lot of critical thinking! Of course, fraternity pledges have a choice whether to participate or not. I'm quite sure the Iraqi smeared with his own feces would have chosen to be just about anywhere else on the planet. The fact that John Ashcroft has illegally refused to reveal to the Senate the memos concerning the abandonment of the articles of the Geneva Convention as they relate to our treatment of prisoners, speaks volumes... The second writer correctly calls the bulk of the American news media "corrupt and degenerate"! Kudos to him, exactly right! But alas, the letter fizzles into fuzzy logic and a lack of facts... and then truly spirals out of control. The writer askes "Have the Arabs apologized to the U.S. over the hundreds of U.S. troops that have been killed"? Which group of Arabs is he referring too? All Arabs? Gee, I dunno, maybe they're not in the mood to aplogize after we illegally, immorally, and under false pretenses, invaded an Arab country, destroyed it's infrastructure, and placed a bunch of hand picked CIA spooks in its interim government. He then continues..."Or the 3000 9/11 victims"? If I'm not mistaken, the entire planet felt our grief on that horrific day. As 15 of the 19 hijackers were Saudi nationals, one would expect an apology from the Saudis, but they were probably too busy packing their bags to get on the only planes flying in the days after 9/11, ushering the Bin Ladens and other important Saudis out of the country, while we were all grounded. And now the icing on the cake, the writer claims, "Arabs invented torture." Huh? I'd love to see some proof of that! Hmmm. Maybe we should ask the families of the ten thousand innocent Iraqi civilians killed by "coalition" forces for apologies because their houses happened to be under one of our very expensive bombs! Willful ignorance is no longer an excuse. Kerry Kraker Cayucos.
