3.  James Dobson discussing stem cell research? I wonder what
slant it will take? <sarcasm off>
I don't know about Specter's position on this, but Bush helped him, so I don't think he is going to be a defender of this research.

12. Specter has been a vocal supporter of stem cell research...
from the very beginning. Here is what he says, from his website:

Washington, D.C. - U.S. Senator Arlen Specter (R-PA), Chairman of the U.S. Senate Appropriations Subcommittee for Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education, sent a letter today to President Bush urging him to expand the policy regarding human stem cells established by the President on August 9, 2001.

Citing new methods for growing human stem cells without the use of mouse feeder cells, Senator Specter stated a reevaluation of the restrictions placed on the program were needed, "so that new stem cell lines that have never been exposed to animal cells can be safely used to create treatments and cures that will improve the health of millions of Americans."

Currently, 78 stem cell lines are listed as being available for federal funding under the President's original proposal - all of which were exposed to mouse feeder cells during their production. Expansion of the current policy would allow progression toward human trials without concern for possible mouse viruses and other contaminating proteins.

"The lack of availability and safety concerns associated with the stem cell lines currently available to federally-funded researchers are impeding progress toward cures," the letter states. "f the 78 stem cell lines identified as eligible for federal funding, only 11 are actually available to doctors and scientists."

( I remember being surprised during the initial debates on this, before bush came down from on high with his "ruling" that Specter had been very vocal in support of stem cell research.)
