Blair religiously insane

http://news.independent.co.uk/uk/politics/story.jsp?story=530984

Revealed: Blair's link to schools that take the Creation literally

A controversial chain of schools teaching Biblical "creationism" has been given Tony Blair's personal support despite serious doubts raised by parents and teachers, The Independent on Sunday can reveal.

Mr Blair, said to be the most religious Prime Minister since Gladstone, has backed the millionaire car dealer Sir Peter Vardy in his attempt to take over seven comprehensives and turn them into Christian Academies promoting Old Testament views of the world's creation. This includes the claim that it was made in six days, 10,000 years ago. Two of Sir Peter's schools are open already, in Gateshead and Middlesbrough, and a third is under construction in Doncaster.

-snip-

He personally opened King's Academy in Middlesbrough, run by Sir Peter, an Evangelical Christian. When Emmanuel College in Gateshead, the first Vardy school, came under attack for teaching creationism, Mr Blair sent Andrew Adonis, one of his most senior policy advisers, to smooth the issue over.

-snip-

The spread of the Vardy Foundation schools has prompted criticism from a group of senior churchmen led by the Bishop of Oxford, Richard Harries. They spoke of their "growing anxiety" and urged close monitoring to ensure that the disciplines of science and religion are both respected. They do not accept the Vardy Foundation's position that evolution can be regarded as a "faith position".

"that evolution can be regarded as a "faith Position"."

what crap!

we need our mental hospitals back.

1. Are the Brits trying to use religion to cause political turmoil again?
Edited on Sun Jun-13-04 12:24 PM by AP
And what does "sanity" have to do with this???

4. No, Vardy is trying to use religion
to undermine children's education. It's shameful that Blair won't stand up to him on this. He's had a full education - he ought to know better.

5. I guess if it's not C of E, it's crap. Do they criticize Catholics like...
...this too?

Oh yeah. They do.

11. No, Catholic aided state schools in Britain are common
and since the Catholics don't believe in creationism, they aren't undermining proper education. So no, we don't criticise Catholic education like this.

13. I was talking about anti-Catholicism fueling politics which interefere...
...with progress.

If it's not C o E, it's worth criticizing in an effort to divide people.

What's the real criticism here?

It's not like the guy isn't building up the public infranstructure and helping people to get a decent education.

If you want to see what it looks like when politicians want to REPLACE public education with religious education, come over to the US.

14. The problem is that a multi-millionaire
is trying to push a fundamentalist myth in schools as science, and Blair is encouraging it. His catchphrase seems to be turning into "education, dogma, education".

Anti-catholicism is limited to Northern Ireland; it has nothing to do with this story.

15. Anti-catholicism is NOT limited to NI.
Edited on Sun Jun-13-04 02:10 PM by AP
But that's an aside.

Most religions believe in creation. Most politicians are religious. Having faith is not mutually exclusive with believing in a strong non-religious state school system. Blair clearly believes that everyone should be able to get a good education provided by the state which has nothing to do with religion. And that's something, considering that the UK is a country with a state sponsored religioun.

When Blair became PM, the press dropped hints that he might be catholic since he goes to mass with his catholic wife and children. It was a slur.

Since Bush came along, the slur is that he's possibly born again.

... Bush and Blair seem unable to accept the evidence of their lies promoting the war--they share a similar attitude about faith.

I'll just wait around for the stories that they've "prayed together."

*sigh*

3. Wow, what brilliance
that the earth and all of its inhabitants were created in 6 days 10,000 years ago!!! Of course that includes all of the fossils that God put in the earth just to fool us, Right??? Have any of these people who have such beliefs ever visited a science museum? Do they disregard scientific knowledge that is revealed every day that we live? Can't wait until the aliens come to stay. WHAT WILL HAPPEN THEN??

9. True believers are immune to logic.
Unfortunately, it has nothing to do with intelligence. The smart ones come up with better ways to rationalize their beliefs.

Faith is the capacity to believe in something that you know is false.

How Tony Blair became the leader of what is suppose to be a left of center, Social Democratic Party is beyond me. Hardline Labourites must be gnashing their teeth at the fact this man leads Labour. It is also worth bringing up the fact he is a religious wingnut. Maybe Michael Moore REALLY needs to do a movie on ol' Tony.

As for Bush, anybody who speaks as if he is an Evangelist and writes off history because "we'll all be dead."really is disturbing.
