Reagan on 1990 Larry King now: more knowledgeable, articulate than W
I remember thinking Reagan was "losing it" by l990, and there had always been a perception by many that he knew little about issues and policy. I am amazed, watching him, and comparing him to George W. Bush. Bush is far, far less aware and articulate. It's incredible, and infuriating; the "teflon" granted Bush by our press and public is tougher, and less deserved, than the teflon that coated Ronald Reagan.

5. The interview simply brought home to me more clearly...
how completely inadequate and unqualified Bush is for the office he occupies. I don't think there is remotely any precedent for his unacceptability.

4. What a low bar it is
A cicada is more aware and articulate than Bush, so saying a rambling old fool with Alzheimer's is better than Bush isn't saying anything.

7. Read seventhson's post on Reagan quotes.
If you can still make that statement, then I will worry about you. The man was as big a moron as W. The big difference was that he knew how to use the right words to paint a picture, like most actors can, and could speak in complete sentences. Most of what he said was dribble, when you actually parse it. It would have made good copy in an ad campaign but then we all knew even back then that using the right toothpaste still wouldn't get you a date if you were a gerbil.

10. seventhson's Reagan is the Reagan I remember --

RR was having a pretty good night, apparently, the night of the Larry King interview. Bush, however, is, I think, worse. I don't mean to build up Reagan, but who knew, in the Reagan years, that a President speaking in complete sentences would be something to be grateful for?

with an alcoholic like Dubya. but something has changed and it's scary. It's like they think they can get away with anything. What are they doing to keep us under control and paying taxes with no benefits that we don't know about?

12. Agreed!
You've maybe put your finger on why the Reagan interview somehow made such an impression on me. It's really scary that a man like Bush is in our White House, when you think of the audacity of those who installed him there.

8. And Reagan went to his grave wearing that teflon suit
that protected him all those years. Reagan's nickname actually was "the Teflon President". Nothing stuck to Reagan... until Iran-Contra. That was too much. I guess it was like burning motor oil in a teflon pan.

9. Reagan was more of a rancher than Shrubby
I saw a clip about how he and his buddies would build fences using telephone poles (!) Ronnie was in a white T and jeans, slinging those big hunks of wood around, and I had to think, "Hot damn, when I'm in my 70's I hope I'm half as buff as that guy." It sure made Shrub's brush clearing photo ops out Crawford way look even more pathetic.

13. Reagan was a bad actor. Monkeynuts is a bad drunk.
Reagan could fake his way through it though. * can't drink without falling. I've never seen a man with so many facial scratches before.
