Anyone see Cspan about half an hour ago? CAPS and shopping list?
in reference to an article in some Washington paper about an Irish woman in charge of some part of Homeland Security. (can't find it) In the article, it discussed new airport security using CAPS to screen the passengers and mentioned that each time a passenger goes through CAPS they are recertified all over again (ie, data supposedly erased about them after each flight) and that the rating the government gives them is based on, among other things "shopping lists".

What shopping lists? Is this a reference to, say, the shopping discount cards one gets from retail stores?

1. I heard it
And shopping cards were the only thing I could think of. Sigh...I use shopping cards. If I didn't I could not afford groceries, unless I shop at Nazi-mart. What's a person to do?

5. Don't you think the "shopping list" might be your cr. card info?
I know it's possible to track anyone's shopping and spending habits by their credit card expenses. That would make more sense than what you buy at a grocery store.

8. Could be but of course that's troubling, too
It's one thing for the government to see a credit report that has an aggregate rating, FICO score, etc, things anyone would see who legitimately is checking out credit and quite another to know the specific purchases I made on my credit card.

6. Nuala O'Connor Kelly was Chief Security Officer at the evil DoubleClick
DoubleClick is one of those horrid companies that installs spyware on computers. A few years ago there was a huge brouhaha because DoubleClick was using their tracking cookies to build databases with profiles of internet users, complete with names and addresses. They supposedly quit that practice.

Later on there was a class action lawsuit against the company because of its deceptive practice of using fake error messages that would trick a computer user into going to a commercial website.

Unsurprisingly O'Connor Kelly was tapped to be Chief Security Office for Homeland Security.

"Prior to her service in the Bush Administration, Ms. O'Connor Kelly served as Vice President-Data Protection and Chief Privacy Officer for Emerging Technologies of the online media services company, DoubleClick. O'Connor Kelly helped found the company's first data protection department and was responsible for the creation of privacy and data protection policies and procedures throughout the company and for the company's clients and partners. O'Connor Kelly also served as the company's first deputy general counsel for privacy."

7. I think it's colloqualism for "picking from a list"
The list might be something like:

  • swarthy complection (yes, I know this is racist - it's their list, not mine)
  • battered passport
  • recent travel to (somewhere)
  • carrying too much cash
  • carrying no cash
  • travelling in a group on another "shopping list"

10. I think I found at least some info on the "shopping list".
At the following link, it says:

Passenger will be asked for:
Full name
address
phone#

This info will be run against the passenger's credit history, arrest record, and property tax data.

I think that is the "shopping list" of data for cross-reference, suposedly to make sure the passenger is who they say they are.
