Any DUers flying an American Flag today?
I literally forgot or I would have put mine out. I usually do for today and for the Fourth of July and maybe some special occasion. I forgot about it being Flag Day and have seen none out of the ordinary flying today. I believe in our symbol and fly it when appropriate. Anyone else here feel the same or has Bush* ruined this as well?

8. My uncle normally doesn't put bumper stickers on his car but he asked me
for a Kerry bumper sticker to put on his car because to him, "having a Kerry bumpersticker on my car is telling the other drivers on the road, 'I am smart'". He put it on with a huge smile last night!

45. I was never THAT attached to it in the first place...
I think things like Flags and Nationalism just divide people. To be a bit cliche for a moment - We are citizens of the world. Patriotism just reekes for "school spirit". Our team is better than yours and all that sort of rubbish.

I didn't like it when I was in school. I don't like it at the national level.

Edited on Mon Jun-14-04 02:37 PM by Richardo
I fly mine as a matter of course. Unless it's night or raining, in which case I know enough about flag etiquette to take it down.

(Unlike SO many of my "patriotic" conservative neightbors, who are flying sun-faded rags at all hours in all kinds of weather.) :eyes:

13. You can fly the flag at night provided you have a spot-light on it
but it must be spot-lighted.

I live on an army post and I don't hesitate to call and report my republican neighbors for their lack of a spot-light.

I don't fly a flag. I do have one, nicely framed, inside my house....on the wall..upside down... with the words:

December 12, 2000
The day democracy died.

15. Why would anyone flame you for that?
It's not a requirement to own a flag. Or an Old Navy flag t-shirt. But it seems to be getting that way.

By the way, I am going to be on a road trip during the Fourth of July and I am glad. The histrionics, bad country music (give me bluegrass), tears and talk of how WOOOOOONDERFUL this country is rubs me the wrong way a bit. So I am glad I won't have to endure it this year.

(am the Precinct Committeeperson) I do own several "patriotic" t-shirts with stars and flags and such, that I bought at the thrift store specifically for canvassing. Wouldn't want my neighbors to think I'm a Jehovah's Witness or Mormon (not that there is anything wrong with those people)

of many years (out now) said he'll put the flag back up when Chimpy has left the White House, and not a moment before.

He said if he puts it up before then, he'd have to put it up upside down to indicate distress/crisis.

I live in a 40 unit condo complex and on every patriotic holiday...everyone here flies the flag. It looked so cool to drive around the complex and see all those flags. I don't think anyone has a flag out today. :( I'm not in the mood to be patriotic.

25. I DO NOT Under ANY Circumstances Fly the Republican Flag
and I feel very strongly about this. I also do not sing the flag song at games, nor do I put my hand over my heart. My heart belongs TO ME. My mind belongs TO ME. I WILL NOT give any part of who I am or what I feel or what I believe to the foul, evil repubs. They have co-opted the icons of this once great country and I will never, ever forgive them for it. I will go to my grave viewing the flag as a symbol and and icon for their shameful hypocrisy and anti-democratic ideals.

Fie on them and fie on flag day.

Grrrrr.

26. It's a shame that it has come to this
I must say that I sympathize with all that you've said. I personally fly the flag every day, because I'll be damned if I'm going to let the Republicans steal MY flag, but I can understand why you'd feel that they've already stolen it. It's funny how the Republicans feel that the stars & bars belongs to them, especially since so many of them fly the confederate flag.

Stars & Stripes the US Flag. And yes that is the flag that the GOP should officially have. It is a symbol of Treason and Traitors which fits the GOP to a TEE/

Bullshit. Those symbols aren't Republican or Democrat or Green or Reform or whatever. They are all of ours. You just make their attempts at owning them a little easier by not making them fight for it.

46. Me neither.
I fly the Gadsden flag. And I don't wanna hear any shit about "Why? it's YOUR flag, TOO!". Lemme tell ya something, up in these parts, the ReTHUGlicans grabbed ahold of the flag and wrapped themselves tightly in it after 11 September, and the implication is that if you fly the stars and stripes, you love Shrub.

By flying the Gadsden flag, I show even the dullest of the dildo-heads that "thet boy don' luv George Bush, Ah think..."

When John Kerry takes the oath, I'll break out the Stars and Stripes again. Until that time.....

43. Rational citizens reject manipulative calls to "patriotism"
Patriotism has long been how the ruling elite has manipulated the rest of the citizens.

As for myself, I see American citizens as owners of America, and the management (politicians, bureucrats) should be obliged to operate America so as to maximize my standard of living.

I fail to see where patriotism fits into this paradigm, and I reject patriotism as a manipulative scheme.

BTW, I am a decorated veteran (I was not always as rational and knowledgable as I am today).
