As a long-time member of Americans United for Sep. of Church & State I admit it's not at the top of my legislative agenda, but I also remember being a little kid in the midwest in the 1970s, being about 8 years old and getting my ass severely kicked by several other kids for saying I was an "atheist" when asked my religion (after they asked me what that meant, of course) and I also remember always mumbling "numbner froppz" around that part of the pledge.

There's no way it belongs there- historically, constitutionally, or any other way you slice it.

The phrase was not put in until the McCarthy era. The nation survived it not being in the original version and we can survive the tribute to Joe's paranoia being left unsaid.
